That’s right, Carson City, summer vacation is officially over. Please give yourself a little more time to get to work: the school zones are back in effect, school buses will be making their rounds, and kids of all ages will be on the sidewalks and in the crosswalks. Good luck to all of our students and teachers, may this year be the best yet.

Grab summer with both hands and go enjoy this beautiful city. The Brewery Arts Center brings Dennis Johnson and the Mississippi Ramblers to the stage for tonight’s free concert. Check out the Railroad Museum for your fill of music and antique motor cars. Car lovers have two shows to choose from today: spectators will be able to enjoy both, but you’ll have to pick one if you want to enter your ride. Keep reading for more summertime fun.
Muscle Powered hosts Saturday hike to the Tahoe Rim Trail from Spooner Summit to South Camp Peak
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 08/16/2018 - 11:44amCarson City's Muscle Powered group will host a Saturday, August 25 hike to the Tahoe Rim Trail from Spooner Summit to South Camp Peak.
Meet at 7:15 a.m. at the Park and Ride lot on Hwy 50 just west of the intersection at 395 to carpool to the trailhead since parking is limited. Plan on 5-6 hours which will include travel time and breaks. For fit, experienced hikers only! This is a great hike but includes some steady uphill, high elevation, and needed stamina to keep up with the group.

If you have a student in need of vaccines, our Health and Human Services Department offers a week-long, walk-in clinic to get you up to speed. These next couple days come with a fun, mathematical quirk: it’s palindrome week. Today is 8-13-18, the same forwards and backwards. Bring the kids to McFadden Plaza on Saturday, August 18 from 10a-2p for all the festivities, and have them bring their backpacks, to fill up with all the supplies that they'll earn as they work their way through the activities and learn about local arts opportunities for after-school fun.
Carson City homeless in need of socks, sleeping bags

This is why Carson City Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Craig LaGier, who is also a deacon for St. Teresa of Avila’s Catholic Church, as well as the St. Vincent Advisor and Homeless Ministry, said sleeping bags and Y Athletic socks are the most important item he gives to the homeless.

Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. Water and sturdy or athletic shoes are required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Some trails are dirt and others are paved. In case of bad weather, we will cancel.

Luckily, you’ll always have some choices that let you stay indoors and break routine. You’ll find bowling specials at the Gold Dust West and at Carson Lanes if the kids need to burn off some energy. A trip to one of our local art galleries will bring some color (and air conditioning) into your day. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival features RoseBud’s Dance Band at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall this evening for a toe-tapping good time.
