Jukebox International Film Festival in Carson City adds to lineup

With less than a month until the doors open, Jukebox International Film Festival (JIFF), the only festival to feature films with music as a central driving theme, has announced that two bands appearing in two films screening at the festival will be appearing live in Carson City that week.
Santa Jam Vó Alberta, a “jam” band from Brazil, will play a variety of shows at diverse locations, including Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, Comma Coffee and East 50 Barber Shop. The latter performance is part of a second documentary about the band that started production in Brazil two-weeks ago and will continue shooting while the band is in northern Nevada.
“According to JIFF staff, Jeremy (the owner of East 50) is such a well known figure in Carson City that we thought it would be great to send the guys home with fresh haircuts, but also have them play while getting those haircuts,” says Denis Nielsen, the director of the film, a sequel to his documentary, Hillbilly Symphony, premiering at JIFF on Friday, Aug. 24.
Nielsen, also from Brazil, is traveling with the band and is enlisting local filmmakers to help capture their adventures in America.
The second band to make the trek to Carson City for JIFF is blood drum spirit, featuring Royal Hartigan, a jazz band that incorporates sounds and instruments from Ghana, West Africa into their repertoire, bringing a new global vision to audiences through their music. Hartigan, along with band mates David Bindman, Wes Brown and Art Hirahara, are booked exclusively at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint on Thursday, Aug. 23.
They will also make presentations to the High School orchestra classes in Carson City during their stay.
Blood Drum Spirit is the subject of Sara Pettinella’s documentary, We Are One, also premiering at JIFF on Aug. 24.
Jukebox International Film Festival will be at the Carson City Community Center on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 23-24, starting at 8 a.m. each day. Workshops conducted by visiting filmmakers are also planned to take place at Brewery Arts Center; that schedule will be announced shortly.
JIFF All Access passes are on sale for $40 at FilmFreeway, the premier website for filmmakers to submit their works to film festivals.
