Carson City homeless in need of socks, sleeping bags
During the winter, the homeless population of Carson City can find warm beds to sleep at our rotating local churches nightly, but during the summer, no such places exist.
This is why Carson City Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Craig LaGier, who is also a deacon for St. Teresa of Avila’s Catholic Church, as well as the St. Vincent Advisor and Homeless Ministry, said sleeping bags and Y Athletic socks are the most important item he gives to the homeless.
LaGier spends several days a week on the streets of Carson City handing out items and giving information to those in need, and during the winter he has run the shuttle from Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH to the churches for overnight stays.
He just gave out his last water donation this week, and will be in need of more, he said, but he personally will not take cash donations.
“If people want to donate money, there is an account at Saint Teresa’s they can donate too, and they can receive a tax deduction as well,” said LaGier.
If you can donate sleeping bags, athletic socks, water, or any product to help our community’s homeless or disabled population, donations can be dropped off at Saint Teresa’s located at 3000 N Lompa Ln, Carson City.
Meanwhile, FISH has recently launched an online food drive. Many clients who had food stamps now have low paying jobs. They need help with food just to “break even” because they lost benefits, and rents have gone up, too.
As a result, FISH has started an on-line food drive, asking folks for $20, $50 and $100 online donations so it can purchase more food. Donate today on the web at: nvfish.com, or visit NVFISH on Facebook and Instagram.
