With recent completion of roadway reconstruction work on the bottom, commercial section of the road, a Nevada Department of Transportation project to reconstruct State Route 207, also known as Kingsbury Grade, is progressing on schedule in advance of a Sept. 2 to October closure to through traffic.

Since the project’s start in May, nearly one and half miles of roadway has been reconstructed, including excavation of nearly 7,000 cubic yards of old road and placement of 10,300 tons of new asphalt.

The Nevada Performance Academy, founded by former Nevada state superintendent, Gene Paslov will be holding an informative meeting on August 4, 6:15 p.m. at VT Williams and Associates, 3470 G.S. Richards Blvd.

Project Americans Coming Together local director Carla Wilson, and event coordinator Joy Evans will hold an informational meeting and auditions for two local original productions designed to bring both national and local history to life.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A package of Northern Nevada lands bills — six introduced by Rep. Mark Amodei (NV-2) and one by Rep. Steven Horsford (NV-4) unanimously passed the House Natural Resources Committee Wednesday.

The bipartisan support clears the way for the legislation to be brought to the House floor in September as a non-controversial suspension bill, according to a news release from Amodei's office.

The compromise agreement was made possible after adjustments to the legislation were made to a version passed in January.

David H. Garza had vehicle expenses disallowed because he did not keep adequate records and evidence as Section 274(d) and the related regulations require.

He did not record the amount, time and business purpose of each business use of his truck. He worked as an outside sales representative for Time Warner Cable.

He claimed the vehicle expenses as employee business expenses on form 1040, Schedule A, Itemized Deductions. Time Warner Cable policy did not provide him with any reimbursement of his business driving.

The Fuji Dog Park will be closed to the public as a dog park in Carson City during the NV 150 Fair. This will be from Monday, July 28 to Tuesday, August 5.

The park will reopen as the dog park on Wednesday, August 6. The city parks and recreation department notes it regrets any inconvenience this may cause, and during this time the public is encourage you to visit and enjoy one of its many other “dog friendly” park facilities. Those are:

— Long Ranch Park, Longview Way & Waterford Drive. Dogs are allowed on or off-leash in designated areas of the park.

Lots of shady trees, a nice gentle breeze and plenty of ice cold beer were enough to keep the heat down a notch Saturday at the High Sierra Regional Chili Cook-Off and Craft Fair in Carson City.

The two-day event at Glen Eagles Restaurant, which continues through Sunday, has brought dozens of the best chili cookers from around the region hoping for a chance to win prize money, bragging rights and a trip to Las Vegas for the World Chili Cook-off Championship. The public is invited to Sunday's event and sampling costs next to nothing, organizers said.

International Chili Society chefs will compete for a chance to go to the World Cook-Off in Las Vegas. The public is invited to sample red and verde chili as well as salsas. Tasting kits are $3 each. The "People's Choice" Chili award will be determined by the vote collected by everyone who samples.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Mark Amodei (NV-2) provided remarks today on the House Floor on the passing of former Carson City Mayor Marv Teixeira who died June 5, 2014 at his home. He was 79. See the video below.

A celebration of life for Teixeira will be Friday, June 20, 11:30 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 3000 North Lompa Lane in Carson City. A reception will follow at Eagle Valley Golf Course, 3999 Centennial Park Drive in Carson City.

Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei had added several new faces to his office staff including Bernie Curtis, who recently retired as chief of the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation.

Curtis, of Gardnerville, will serve as field representative in Amodei’s Reno office. He brings more than 36 years of experience from across Northern Nevada in law enforcement, local government and the private sector, including serving as Douglas County Commissioner.

Lake Tahoe Community College's Theatre Arts Department presents the Broadway hit musical, “Man of La Mancha,” with the first performance Friday, June 13 at the campus theater.

This Tony Award-winning musical tells the tale of Don Quixote, the mad knight who sets out on a noble journey to battle evil and win the heart of the Lady Dulcinea.

In addition to his usual responsibilities as music director for the musical,the school's own Dr. Mark D. Williams, plays the title role of “Don Quixote.” Audiences will be inspired by his performance of “The Impossible Dream.”

Carson City Library will host the 2014 Spokes team Monday as they ride through town. The group of seven students and alumni from Harvard, MIT, and Columbia are biking from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.

Spokes America is a bike trip across the United States designed to make STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) accessible to students everywhere. The Spokes team will be at the Carson City Library with plans to run a “Learning Festival” during their June 16 visit.

Dr. Julie Hardt has been named the new head coach of the Carson Tigersharks. A Carson City resident, Hardt graduated from Carson High School and was a Tigersharks team member for years.

An accomplished swimmer, Hardt participated in the US Olympic team trials in 2000 and 2004, is an 8-time All-American from the University of Georgia, a 2001 FINA World Champion and U.S. record holder is the 4 X 200m freestyle relay and a top 10 finalist as NCAA Woman of the Year 2004.

Former Nevada State Superintendent of Schools Eugene "Gene" Paslov died Sunday after suffering a brain hemorrhage. He was 80.

Paslov was married to wife Susan and the couple have three children. He died peacefully at Renown Medical Center in Reno. Services will be held Saturday, 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Carson City.

Growing up only a half-hour away from Seattle in Maple Valley, Wash., the Seattle Mariners have always been Taylor Smart’s baseball team.

The former Western Nevada College infielder’s boyhood dream of one day playing for the Mariners became closer to reality on Saturday when the Mariners selected Smart in the 26th round of the Major League Baseball draft.

No one is ever going to call Conor Harber a one-dimension player. Two straight All-American honors and two different paths to the award certainly highlight the Western Nevada College baseball player’s versatility.

Harber became the first Wildcat to earn back-to-back All-American honors when the National Junior College Athletic Association named the sophomore pitcher to the third team earlier this week.

One of the great mysteries of sports is the amateur baseball draft. With the largest pool of players under consideration for draft selection than any other major sport and ball players being scouted from a variety different levels, there is plenty of uncertainty to go around.

Even with a 40-round format, many outstanding players go unselected by a Major League Baseball team. However, a draft hasn’t gone by without at least one Western Nevada College player being selected since the Carson City baseball program formed in 2006.

Western Nevada College and the Nevada Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities will host a ‘Journey of Hope’ Celebration Friday, June 6, for 35 bicyclists traveling from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. to support those with disabilities. This is a community event free and open to the public from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Carson City campus. Food, speakers, music, dancing, karaoke and a free raffle will entertain, and flu/T-dap shots and disability resource information tables will inform visitors.

Western Nevada College and the Nevada Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities will host a Journey of Hope Celebration on Friday in Carson City for 35 cyclists who are riding from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., to support those with disabilities.

Friday’s free social gathering, which promotes disability awareness and community education, is open to the public and runs from 5 to 8 p.m. in front of the Dini Student Center at WNC.

The ComputerCorps "Every-Home-A-Classroom" TechCamp is an annual summer program for youth 10-15 years old. For the past 14 years, this 2-week program gives kids the opportunity to learn about computer recycling, testing and assembly while building a computer system they can take home or give to a needy family at the end of camp.

Carson City District Attorney Neil Rombardo and Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger recognized moms and their children at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada.

The awards were in recognition of the first graduating pre-school class of the District Attorney’s Moms Program and recognition to the moms for learning new parenting and job skills to help them into the future, according to a news release.

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and Golden Corral recently presented the James H. Maynard Excellence in Education Award to Penny Reynolds of Carson High School in Carson City and Cecilia Stec of Kentlake High School in Washington State.

Western Nevada College will graduate 543 students this spring. Commencement was held Monday in Carson City with a ceremony to be held Tuesday in Fallon. The class of 2014 will receive a record 581 degrees and certificates.

Also on Monday, the WNC nursing program graduates celebrated with a traditional pinning ceremony at the Carson Nugget. Dr. Tom Kubistant, a WNC psychology and communications instructor, delivered the Carson City ceremony commencement address.

Dusting themselves off after their worst loss of the season, the Western Nevada College Wildcats showed why they are still playing baseball in the middle of May. Spenser Dorsey belted a two-run homer and the Wildcats rapped out eight hits in the first three innings en route to an 8-2 victory over Trinidad State of Trinidad, Colo., at the Western District Tournament on Friday in Phoenix.

“A great job by our team of bouncing back, which they’ve done all year,” WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. “It was an all-around team effort.

Work ethic, determination, commitment and effort are just some of the qualities that contribute to the Western Nevada College baseball team’s success. That the Wildcats are still playing when many junior college teams have packed away their equipment and uniforms is a product of a program designed to make the players successful.

“It’s a testament to the work ethic of the players, a testament to the culture established by previous teams and the quality of the position coaches that are developing the players,” said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore. “We go into every game expecting to win.”
