Carson City Library to host Spokes America 2014
Carson City Library will host the 2014 Spokes team Monday as they ride through town. The group of seven students and alumni from Harvard, MIT, and Columbia are biking from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.
Spokes America is a bike trip across the United States designed to make STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) accessible to students everywhere. The Spokes team will be at the Carson City Library with plans to run a “Learning Festival” during their June 16 visit.
This summer, the team will bike across the United States in collaboration with “Teach for America” as part of an effort to rethink education. As they journey, they will stop along the way at public schools and libraries throughout the country to hold Learning Festivals.
At each visit they will teach hands-on, project-oriented classes based on enthusiam and interests. Students will have the opportunity to learn and explore through fun, hands-on workshops. Kids will learn about circuits by building a laser transmitter, or about design and tools by taking apart bicycle parts and building something new! The team hopes to get the next generation of students excited about designing, tinkering, learning, and creating.
The organization’s motivation is dedicated to revealing the exploratory, self-directed, and boundless nature of learning to students across the U.S. Their mission stems from the simple idea that most of the learning we do over the course of our lifetimes happens outside of a classroom as the result of semi-random explorations into topics that genuinely interest us.
Your Knowledge and Discovery Place, the Carson City Library is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 .m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 np.m., is located at the corner of Roop and Washington Streets.
