WNC Baseball: Coyotes Capitalize on Wildcat Miscues to Take Series Opener
Submitted by editor on Thu, 03/26/2015 - 7:09pmThree late-inning errors snapped a tie and sent College of Southern Nevada to a 5-2 series-opening baseball victory over Western Nevada College on Thursday in Carson City.
The win pulled the Coyotes (8-5) within one game of the first-place Wildcats (9-4) in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings. CSN ace Phil Bickford, the 10th pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball amateur draft, is scheduled to pitch the opening game of Friday's doubleheader set for noon at John L. Harvey Field.

On this day in 1982, a ground-breaking ceremony was held in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Carson City has a Vietnam Veterans Memorial of its own located in Mills Park. The memorial will be the site of a Welcome Home Celebration this Saturday for Vietnam Veterans Day.
WNC Baseball: Series with Southern Rival begins Thursday

The four-game series begins at 4 p.m. Thursday at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City. On Friday, the teams will play at doubleheader at noon and then conclude the series with a single game at noon Saturday.

WNC scored five runs in the eight to pull away from Mount Hood Community College of Gresham, Ore., in a 10-3 win in the opener of a nonconference baseball doubleheader at John L. Harvey Field.

Young no-hit Mount Hood Community College of Gresham, Ore., until catcher Louis Wolf bunted down the third-base line for the Saints' first hit with two outs in the seventh inning at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.
Young and reliever Kyle Johnson combined on a two-hit shutout as the Wildcats won the opening game of the doubleheader, 3-0. Both hits never left the infield.

“These big fish are in a steep decline,” Zeb Hogan, conservation biologist and researcher in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Science, said. “The disappearance of aquatic animals is a freshwater extinction crisis.”

Clinging to a two-run lead in the eighth inning, Western Nevada College coach D.J. Whittemore calculatingly shifted his relief pitchers from the mound to left field and first base to preserve a 3-0 victory over Colorado Northwestern Community College in the final game of a Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball series.

Whittemore and his Western Nevada College baseball program hit another milestone Thursday when the Wildcats secured the team's 400th all-time victory by dispatching Colorado Northwestern Community College, 9-6. Now in his 10th season, Whittemore has guided the Wildcats to an average of nearly 44 wins per season.
"To be able to share it with (assistant) Aaron Demosthenes, who is a great friend of mine, tremendously loyal and very talented coach, for him to be here for all 400 wins is really special," Whittemore said.

CHS concert band plays alongside USAF musicians during sold out Carson City performance

Yet several CHS band and Chamber Choir students played and sang along with the USAF Concert Band and Singing Sergeants during a sold out show at the Bob Boldrick Theater inside the Carson City Community Center on Wednesday night.

CSI, however, bounced back to take game two, using a small-ball approach that its counterparts have succeeded with in the past. The Golden Eagles beat out three bunt singles and executed two sacrifice bunts to overcome home runs by Pool and Kody Reynolds in an 8-4 victory.

Karnos (2-1) no-hit the Golden Eagles through six innings and Kody Reynolds and Jake Bennett supplied three hits apiece as the Wildcats stemmed a five-game losing streak in Henderson. Former Western Nevada College pitcher Rayne Raven hurled seven shutout innings and fanned 16 hitters in his first outing for Cal State University, Northridge in a 6-0 victory over Utah Valley on Saturday.
Two days after the overpowering performance, the junior right-hander was among Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week and was the first pitcher of the week for the Big West Conference for the 2015 season.
