Phenomenal Eruption: Millions of butterflies swarm Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — If you thought you were seeing many more butterflies around Lake Tahoe than normal, you would be correct. The entire Lake Tahoe Basin is in the midst of a massive swarm of the winged beauties, especially in the Angora Fire burn area and along the east shore.

Hot August Nights Kickoff Rally cruises to downtown Virginia City

Hundreds of attendees and classic cars packed downtown Virginia City during the Hot August Nights Kickoff Rally on Saturday.

The first Hot August Nights began on Aug. 1, 1986 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, and Virginia City brought a sense of nostalgia back to the historic mining town.

Heading into the last day of the month, July 31, 2019 and we should note it has been a pretty good summer so far weather wise, without much in the way of extreme heat. But as they say here in the Silver State, wait 15 minutes and it is bound to change. On tap Wednesday, there's a preserving family history workshop hosted by the Nevada State Library and Archives, art showings, Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center and more. Enjoy.

Photo Finish: Carson Mall Hot Wheels Race Day winners

The Carson Mall wants to thank all the participants who came out for its second Got Hot Wheels Race Car Race Day on Saturday. The next Hot Wheels race will be Sept. 14.

Racers brought their favorite Hot Wheels, Matchbox or similar-sized car and competed against peer racers for bragging rights and prizes. The race was on a 15-foot downhill race track and was single elimination.

CARSON CITY — Fifty years after Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took “one giant leap for mankind,” the image of putting a man on the moon remains a source of pride wrapped in awe for most Americans.

The young and young of heart still dream of becoming astronauts and most people 50-plus can tell you where they were and what they were doing that July day in 1969.

Central Lyon County investigates Silver Springs fire involving structures, vehicles

UPDATE TUESDAY: Fire Chief Rich Harvey from Central Lyon Fire tells News 4-Fox 11 that six to ten out buildings, about a dozen cars and two homes were destroyed by the fire. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 5:09PM: A Lyon County battalion chief said Red Cross will be notified that occupants from three separate residences have been displaced in what he described as "a significant event."

UPDATE 4:59PM: Central Lyon County Fire reports forward progress of the fire was stopped at 4:55 p.m. The cause is under investigation. It is unknown at this time how many structures, vehicles and other property have burned.

UPDATE 4:45PM: Lyon County has opened a shelter at the Silver Springs Community, Senior Center at 2945 Fort Churchill Road in Silver Springs.

UPDATE 4:32PM: Central Lyon Fire and other agencies are fighting the wildland urban interface fire in Silver Springs. Resources from Yerington, Storey County, Lyon County Road Department and Carson City are responding. EMS is establishing a triage area, said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page. All people are advised to stay out of the area.

Central Lyon County Fire Protection District responded Monday afternoon to a fire in the area of Truckee Drive, Esmeralda and Pueblo streets in Silver Springs that in which structures were fully involved in fire.

NDOT: Single lane closures on State Route 207 Kingsbury Grade begin Wednesday

CARSON CITY — Single lane closures will take place on the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) July 17-31 as the Nevada Department of Transportation clears roadside slopes.

An early Wednesday morning fire at a Brown Street apartment complex that destroyed four vehicles has been determined to be arson, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon.
