The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sculptor Mark Combs gives viewers two approaches to his metalwork. His earlier distressed metal car-part sculptures are ornamented with soldered rods and bolts reflecting a ruptured system both socially and figuratively. His carefully hammered bone pieces came into shape after hours of forging as a nod to death and celebrations of life. In Vanish, her printed enlargements of unnamed 19th century portraits on silk are elevated to fly across our vision like fleeting memories.

— Superheroes sought: Carson City CASA hosts information hour, training. 5:30 p.m. Every child needs a hero, but abused children need Superheroes. We’ve heard a million times that kids are sponges, absorbing all that they see and hear. That includes the good, the bad and the ugly. It makes sense that they want to imitate one of the good guys in a show or cartoon. To a child, a superhero is magical. A superhero is powerful! A superhero can help keep them safe. Do you know the best way that you can represent children in foster care? Be a Superhero and become one of our Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers and speak up for a child’s best interests. There will be a CASA volunteer information this Thursday, July 11, 2019, 5:30 p.m. at the CASA Office, 1539 E. 5TH Street, Carson City. (Turn into the Juvenile Court parking lot and drive straight to the back.) CASA is the only volunteer organization that empowers everyday citizens as officers of the court. In an overburdened social welfare system, abused and neglected children often slip through the cracks among hundreds of current cases. CASA volunteers change that. Appointed by judges, CASA volunteers typically handle just one case at a time — and commit to staying on that case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. While others may come and go, CASA volunteers provide that one constant that children need in order to thrive. We need Superheroes like you! Currently there are over 100 children in Carson City alone that are navigating the child welfare system. They’re scared and they don’t know what’s going to happen next. They need a powerful advocate, someone who will speak up for them and get to know them and their story.
— Summer Bicycling Series: Truckee River Legacy Trail. 5:30 to 9 p.m. either paved, dirt, or gravel. A mountain bike or hybrid bike will work best. Bikes are available to rent through Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space. Ages 14-17 are permitted with a participating adult. Transportation is provided from the Carson City Community Center. Participants should know how to ride a bike and be able to bike several miles. Please pack water, snacks, and sun-screen to suit your needs. Space is limited, register online here.
