Nevada Agriculture department urges horse owners to vaccinate for West Nile Virus
Submitted by editor on Wed, 05/07/2014 - 8:49amWith mosquito season arriving, the Nevada Department of Agriculture urges horse owners to contact their veterinarians and update their animals’ West Nile Virus vaccinations.
The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, which are active in warm seasons. Since 2004, there have been 205 confirmed West Nile Virus in Nevada horses, said Bob Conrad of the Nevada Department of Agriculture.

HHS Report: 45,390 Nevadans have enrolled in Health Insurance Marketplace
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 05/01/2014 - 12:58pmNevada enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace under the Affordable Care Act was 45,390 from Oct. 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday.
Nevada's enrollment includes “in line” and other enrollment activity such as people enrolling due to a change in life circumstance reported through Saturday, April 19, 2014.
Nationwide, enrollment surged to eight million at the end of the first enrollment period, said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Most folks will have paid some foreign taxes if they have foreign stocks that pay dividends. There are also other kinds of foreign income that might have foreign taxes withheld.
Man arrested after allegedly stalking teen at Carson High School track meet
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 04/28/2014 - 10:59amA 58-year-old man was arrested Saturday by Carson City sheriff's deputies on suspicion of being in possession of a firearm on school grounds and stalking, both gross misdemeanor offenses.
The Minden man was at a track meet at Carson High School and was stalking a female student, whom he made contact with a week prior, according to the arrest report. The man handed the student a business card, telling her: "Text me, hey, when you feel the time is right."

NEA announces $768,500 in arts funding for Nevada
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 04/17/2014 - 3:13pmThe National Endowment for the Arts will award $768,500 in grants to the Nevada Arts Council, the Western Folklife Center, the Churchill Arts Council and the Nevada Ballet Theater as part of the second half of NEA’s fiscal year 2014 funding, Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa announced Thursday.
The NAC was awarded $663,500 for the third year of its Partnership Agreement Grant, which supports the agency’s programs, outreach activities and various grant categories.

Prescribed fire activity continues around Lake Tahoe

Recent rain and snow made conditions too wet for burning this week, but fire management staff expect conditions to be dry enough for burning next week.
Smoke from March 29 prescribed fires in the Stateline area did drift into Carson City and Lyon County.
Lyon County Board of Commissioners OK tentative budget without employee cuts

Nevada awarded $4.7 million in federal Homeland Security funding

The grant award, known as the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act, goes to states that are considered the nation’s highest risk areas, including urban areas that face the most significant threats.

Fifth annual Nevada Moves Day celebrated Wednesday in Carson City, Lyon County

This event consists of organized activities that encourage walking or bicycling to school. The event is promoted statewide by the Safe Routes to School Program.
Governor Brian Sandoval issued a proclamation declaring March 19 as Nevada Moves Day 2014 and will meet students from Bordewich-Bray Elementary School who are taking part in a walking school bus that starts at the Governor’s Mansion on Mountain Street.

Carson City Sheriff's Office warns of new phone scam where caller threatens jail time
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 03/13/2014 - 4:37pmThe Carson City Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a telephone scam where a man claiming to be a law officer is calling and telling people they missed jury duty and they will go to jail unless they immediately pay a fine.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said at least five residents have been contacted regarding this scam and warns that people should not fall for it.
NDOW: Bears to emerge from their dens soon

The first bears to emerge are usually males and females who do not have cubs. Females with cubs usually emerge from the den later in the spring, from mid-April to early May.
“The bears are ready to eat as they emerge from their long winter’s nap,” says biologist Carl Lackey. “They will eat emergent grasses and forbs and will also key in on the carrion of dead and decaying animals that died over the winter period.”

Nevada Arts Council brings arts visioning to Carson community

The Arts Council is launching a series of local arts town meetings to engage in conversations with Nevadans. Staff plans to explore the cultural needs of large and small communities, the role of the arts in the Silver State and to evaluate NAC’s role as a state agency.
Birds on view in family program at Nevada State Museum March 8

A biologist for the Nevada Department of Wildlife, Jeffers will bring some of the live owl species native to Nevada and explain their life history.
Tickets are available at 9 a.m. The museum will offer a science activity from 10 a.m. to noon in the Discovery Lab, that includes examples of bird’s nests, feathers and eggs, and an opportunity to dissect an owl pellet.

Carson City man arrested after allegedly stealing father's truck

Josh Baroni is being held on $25,000 bail. According to the arrest report, Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 600 block of of Kay Court in reference to a stolen vehicle.

Man convicted, sentenced for deer poaching

Nerces Sarkis Himidian, 68, was ordered upon conviction to pay a $1,000 fine and $2,500 in civil penalties to the Operation Game Thief program.
Prescribed fire operations continue around the Lake Tahoe Basin

Carson City dispatch was alerted by concerned residents this afternoon about smoke seen south and west of C Hill. Firefighters confirmed it came from the controlled burns.
Prescribed fire activities are taking place on Spooner Summit on the East Shore, off of Bunker Drive near Tahoe City, on the west side of Highway 89 N near Tahoma, and in the Luther Pass Campground off of Highway 89 S near South Lake Tahoe.
Carson City man not allowed in casinos jailed on probation violation charges
