Outdoors with Don Q: Escaping Carson City in the wintertime

For several years, Elaine and I have fled Carson City for a short time in the month of January or February to escape the cold, snow and ice of our area in the wintertime. This year was no exception, except, sadly, there is no snow.

We had been invited to be guests at the home of my cousin Lorraine and her husband Bob Scholes of Dayton, who spend the winter months in Indio, Calif.
If you, too, would like to temporarily escape winter in Carson City for the next couple of months, here is what we did:

Carson City public safety reminder: Driving while using a cell phone is illegal

Deputies see it everyday, drivers talking on their cell phones or texting while driving. What’s the big deal? Well for one thing, it is illegal but, it also distracts you from concentrating on the roadway and traffic ahead of you.

Five seconds to send a quick text is equal to the length of a football field when driving 55 miles per hour. That’s how long your eyes are off the road. The average text conversation lasts about three minutes.

Winter Bicycle Commuting

Sometimes people ask me jokingly, “You have snow tires for that thing?”. I think most people assume it’s time to put the bikes away when the snow starts falling. When I reply, “Yes, actually I do. I have a set of studded snow tires with 240 studs per tire!”, they seem pretty surprised. Not only because such a thing exists, but that you’d want to ride in the snow in the first place. Like any other winter activity though, winter biking can be fun with the right gear.

Downtown Carson City vision plan promotes small business, provides incentive for new business

There has been a lot of controversy and negative press over the last few years regarding our downtown and the movement of the 20/20 group. Many of you remember Carson City having a downtown. Some of you are new to our area within the last 30 years, and some are of a generation who grew up here and only know what you have been familiar with. In all these scenarios change is very unsettling.
