In September, 13,560 initial claims for unemployment insurance were filed in Nevada, a slight decline compared to both the previous 12-month average, which was 14,339 and 6-month average that stood at 13,955, the Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reports Thursday.

However, it is up slightly from the level seen in August which had 13,063 initial claims, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for the agency.

The annual tradition of Homecoming is upon us. There are many activities taking place this week, both athletic and non-athletic. Each day has a particular dress-up theme, a lunch time activity, and an evening time activity that students can participate. Tuesday’s dress up day is “crazy hat” day.

National Earth Science Week highlights the dynamics of geosciences while encouraging communities to explore the beauty of their surrounding environments. In celebration of the event, the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology will host the 17th Annual Earth Science Week Field Trip, Oct. 11 and 12, 2014. The same field trip will be run on each day, so you have two chances to attend.

The 2014-2015 school year marks the 10th anniversary of the Poetry Out Loud program. Since 2005, more than 16,000 students throughout Nevada have powered up poetry by memorizing and reciting the words of classic and contemporary poets. Students can be a part of this creative community and join the celebration of the spoken word.

The Carson City Greenhouse Project at Carson High School is one of 14 projects in Nevada to receive specialty crop block grant money designed for organizations that promote and enhance speciality crops through education, research, marketing and production, the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday.

The $21,577 in grant money earmarked for the Greenhouse Project will help fund the Growing America’s Future Farmer program, said JoAnne Skelly, extension educator with the University of Nevada and grant writer for the Greenhouse Project.

Now that Autumn has arrived, it’s a great time to explore the areas east of Carson City. These trails and back roads can be impassable in the winter, muddy in the Spring, and too hot during the Summer. This time of year, though, the dry conditions and mild temperatures make it the perfect time to go. One of our favorite Fall rides is the off-road route up to Virginia City via the American Flat Toll Road. With the area’s fun and lively Old West history, this ride has started to become an annual event.

Three people were arrested Thursday, each facing felony charges related to a burglary that happened at the site of a fifth wheel travel trailer located off of Brunswick Canyon, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Arrested were Michelle Rene Salas, 40, Danielle Marie Abella, 33, each facing charges of burglary and possession of stolen property, and Brandon Arlo Johnson, 35, who was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property.

Many Nevada schoolchildren will take part in organized events to walk or bicycle to school on Oct. 8 in recognition of International Walk to School Day.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and the Tahoe Heritage Foundation will host the Fall Fish Festival this weekend, October 4-5, 2014, at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore. The Fall Fish Festival focuses on a variety of fish species that live in Lake Tahoe and its streams including the federally threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout, little-known smaller fish, such as Speckled dace, and the Kokanee salmon.

The Cascade Fire burning near Snow Lake on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe continues to hold at 30 acres as of Thursday afternoon, according to the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. The wildfire is located entirely in the Desolation Wilderness. No structures are threatened.

A band of rain showers is moving through northern California and approaching the King Fire Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Some light rain and higher humidity will likely decrease fire activity, meaning much less smoke, if any, will pass east of the Sierra Crest.

Nearly 30 years ago, the Nevada Arts Council and its partners created a radio series that would chronicle the fabric of Nevada folk heritage from experts in local arts that include bit and spur making, the language of gaming, neon glass blowing, cradleboarding and more. In celebration of the state’s 150th birthday, the full 13-episode series “Home Means Nevada 1986: Folklife in the Silver State” has been digitized.

The deal bringing Tesla Motors to Northern Nevada has stirred up a storm of interest from manufacturers, businesses, developers and real estate speculators.

The King Fire, which started a week ago, Sept. 13, has now burned nearly 81,000 acres east of Pollock Pines in El Dorado County. As of Saturday morning, the human-caused fire is 10 percent contained.

West Nile Virus has been found in additional areas of Carson City, the Nevada Department of Agriculture said Friday. It has confirmed the presence in tested wetlands, ditches and other small bodies of water done early September, primarily along the I-580 freeway.

UPDATE: Air quality monitors in Carson City and Gardnerville are reporting levels of particulate matter in the unhealthy range due to smoke from the King fire in California, according to Nevada environmental health officials.

People with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should consider moving activities indoors and avoid prolonged or heavy exertion. Everyone else should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.

Nevada's initial August unemployment claims fell 15.4 percent over July of this year, but are up 1.6 percent compared to 2013 figures for the month.

Initial claims have fallen compared to the previous year in 53 of the past 57 months, and August’s level, at 13,063 claims, is the fifth lowest for any month since the end of the recession, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

UPDATE: June Lake Fire Road Closures. The fire remains controlled with small hot spots. Fire crews continue to work on these hot spots.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will begin letting people through Hwy 158 beginning at 1:00 PM with the advisement of fire activity and equipment on the roadway. Please be aware and respect all fire equipment, personnel and hazards in or on the roadway. Think safety first for our fire and law enforcement personnel and for yourselves. Please use caution when traveling through the area.

Hwy 158 is anticipated to be fully open at 2:00 PM. Again, please be mindful of fire personnel and equipment and all first responders and law enforcement in the area. Travel safe!

UPDATE 330PM: According to a Tweet this afternoon from Caltrans, Highway 50 is back open but the westbound No. 2 lane will remain closed overnight because of ongoing King Fire issues. A portion of the highway and artery for traffic into and out of South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, had been closed since Tuesday, from Sly Park Road to Fresh Pond, due to burning trees falling on the road.

Meanwhile, the June Fire burning in Mono County is estimated to be 65 acres and 50 percent contained.

The presence of West Nile Virus has been confirmed in Carson City, the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Monday. Officials tested wetlands, ditches and other small bodies of water during the first week of September and of the samples collected so far the virus is present in one of the test sites.

The site was in a rural, eastern area of Carson City, along the Carson River, said Dustin Boothe, division manager and epidemiologist for the Carson City Health and Human Services.

The U.S. Forest Service will hold an open house on Thursday, September 18, 2014, to explain and answer questions about its draft analysis of a proposal from Heavenly Mountain Resort to expand year-round, non-skiing activities at the Lake Tahoe resort.
