Two recent solar storms may produce northern lights visible over Northern Nevada on Friday and Saturday.
NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center predicts that the two solar eruptions that happened earlier this week will travel past Earth, producing geomagnetic storms — explosions of magnetic field and plasma from the Sun's corona out into space.

A 25-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday, 8:36 a.m. in the 200 block of Hackamore Way on a misdemeanor charge of obstructing an officer.

According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the area in reference to a possible structure fire. Officers were advised there had been suspicious activity in the home and that subjects with warrants for their arrests had been hiding inside.

A Reno couple pled guilty Wednesday in a Sacramento federal court to possessing counterfeit U.S. currency and counterfeit or unauthorized access devices, U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner said.

William Theodore Lewis, 50, and Lori Marie Dahl, 50, a married couple, remain in custody and are scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Kimberly J. Mueller on Dec. 10, 2014. Lewis and Dahl each face a maximum statutory penalty of 25 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and five years of supervised release.

University of Nevada, Reno alumni Fatih Ozmen ’81 M.S. and Eren Ozmen ’85 MBA have pledged $5 million to create a new entrepreneurship center in conjunction with the University’s College of Business. To date, this is the largest gift the College of Business has received.

The plain news is that Tesla motors sealed a deal with Nevada to locate a major new plant in Reno. You'd think that would be good news, with major investment and thousands of permanent jobs for the area. People should be cheering. But it comes in exchange for major tax breaks. That’s the bad news. So, instead of cheering, some people are turning on the Governor and others. Some, like the Nevada Policy Research Institute (NPRI) are raising policy, legal and constitutional issues.

UPDATE: The ‪Meadow Fire‬ in Yosemite National Park is exhibited explosive growth Sunday, producing pyrocumulus clouds visible in Carson City and Reno, according to the National Weather Service.

The fire is burning in the Little Yosemite Valley area and at last report was 700 acres and growing. Smoke from the fire will impact areas to the northeast of Yosemite. High resolution forecast models show that a layer of smoke will affect the Carson City, Reno and Carson Valley areas by Monday morning if intense burning continues, according to the weather service.

Words become pictures, framed art in their own right, as poetry and prose by beloved local writers are exhibited at the Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery in Carson City. It has been one of the busier summers for Nevada Wildlife officials in terms of bear activity. In July, NDOW responded to almost two dozen bear calls, but what about August?

“These rains that we have been having at the end of July and early August have actually slowed bear activity down,” said Chris Healy with the Department of Wildlife.

Hello fellow anglers. Two weeks ago we headed out to go fishing but I made a small mistake, when I got to Highway 395 I went north instead of south.  Seven hours later we ended up in Rogue River Oregon, which is a few miles south of Grants Pass.  

We stayed with family and did a lot of fishing on the Rogue River until the 107 degree heat drove us to the coast.
There, we fished out of Brookings, Oregon for salmon. The temperature was a nice 65 degrees. We fished  for a couple hours with no success so we drove the boat up the coast a few miles and fished for cod.

A mountain is being destroyed, and the neighborhood below it is being polluted by off-road vehicles in Douglas County.
Hot Springs Mountain is on BLM land, and it towers right above the neighborhood known as Johnson Lane.
The mountain has been cut up by a web of trails created by off-road vehicles.
Heavy use of the trails pulverizes the soil and the trails become loose and unable to support even foot traffic yet alone the vehicle traffic. The off-road operators then cut new (bypass) trails. Ultimately the new trails get pulverized and the process starts again.

Silver City, NV – August 4, 2014 – The Comstock Residents Association (CRA) announced today that it is seeking financial assistance from Comstock Mining Inc. (CMI) to conduct document and data review following the mine’s continued activity near residences in the area.

This request succeeds CMI’s offer to pay for blood testing and soil analysis for Silver City residents due to potential health and environmental consequences of mining activity close to homes in the area.

The month of July ended with the Nevada Department of Wildlife dealing with 20 black bears in the 31 days.

“That is a faster than normal pace,” says NDOW biologist Carl Lackey, “but it is really the calm before the storm with potential nuisance bear activity in western Nevada. This is the time of year that the bears expand their search for food and during that search bears and the activities of people often come in to conflict. August, September and October should be very busy with our bears.”

Fruit trees throughout western Nevada blossom in the spring and will produce ripened fruit in mid-summer. As the fruit develops, the black bears in western Nevada are sure to take notice.

Armed with a sense of smell that is 2,100 times better than a human’s, black bears can tell when it is time to venture down the hill into places like west Reno, Washoe and Pleasant Valleys, Carson City and the western edges of the Carson Valley including Minden, Gardnerville and Genoa.

UPDATE: Thursday at 11 a.m., the Wells Fargo coach will be delivering Governor Brian Sandoval, Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell and Wells Fargo Regional Manager Chad Osorno and Wells Fargo Northern Nevada Area Manager Sean French to Fuji Park in south Carson City to preside over the official opening and ribbon cutting of Carson City’s contribution to the NV150 Anniversary event, the NV150Fair.

The NV150Fair will feature over 90 4-H and Future Farmers of America kids from around the region showcasing their animals and farm knowledge.

A 65-year-old California man was arrested on a felony warrant charge of suspicion of statutory sexual seduction. Ronald Gene Hicks of Highland, Calif., was brought into jail Wednesday through an extradition and a $20,000 bail amount was set. No other information was available. The warrant was issued July 8, 2014 out of Carson City Justice Court.

In other felony arrests: A 23-year-old Carson City woman, Kady Joann Werlinger, was arrested July 23 in the 4200 block of Shelbyville on felony drug charges of maintaining a drug house and possession of methamphetamine.

Two black bears trapped Tuesday were released back into the wild by Nevada Department of Wildlife wardens. So far, 11 bears have been safely released back into the Sierra since July 1.

Both bears were tagged, tattooed and micro chipped in order to identify them in the future should they come back in to contact with humans. Neither bear had previously been handled by NDOW.

A male black bear was euthanized Friday in Genoa for killing livestock, Nevada Department of Wildlife officials said. It is the first bear killed this year determined to be depredating livestock. In 2013 two bears were euthanized for the same reason.

The bear, estimated to be six years of age, had been handled by NDOW personnel two other times before, earlier this week and in April.

Unemployment insurance claims in Nevada fell slightly in June, the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reports Thursday.

last month, 14,503 initial claims for unemployment insurance were filed in Nevada, down just 3 percent compared to June 2013. Initial claims have fallen compared to the previous year for 19 straight months and in 52 of the past 55 months.

The decline in initial claims was the smallest since May 2013, when initial claims fell by just under 1 percent, said Bill Anderson, DETR's chief economist.

A brush fire started just after 6:45 p.m. Wednesday night in the hills above Carson City between Jacks Valley Road and Clear Creek Road. Fire officials are calling it the Clear Creek Fire and it had burned 150 acres as of 9:45 p.m.

The area is not easily accessible. Hot Shots were dropped onto the hills nearby to fight the fire as well as drops from three air tankers and two helicopters. Hand crews will stay on the fire during the night.

The fire was started by lightning and the region saw dozens more strikes into the evening.

Two female black bears, captured in Incline Village Tuesday, were safely released into the Lake Tahoe backcountry Wednesday by the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
