Carson City man arrested after allegedly stealing father's truck

A 35-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of felony grand larceny after allegedly stealing his father's truck.
Josh Baroni is being held on $25,000 bail. According to the arrest report, Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 600 block of of Kay Court in reference to a stolen vehicle.

Upon arrival officers made contact with the brother of the suspect who advised Josh Baroni had taken their father's truck. The brother stated Josh didn't have permission to take the truck and the father wanted to file charges against his son. The father was contacted by telephone who advised officers what had happened.
The father stated his son had been told not to come onto the property because of family issues. It was learned Josh did enter the house without permission and stayed for 30 minutes before leaving in a white 2004 Ford F-250, owned by his father, according to the arrest report.

A grand larceny report was completed by the father. The truck was found in the 100 block of S. Curry Street, where Josh Baroni was seen walking away from it. He was arrested and placed into a patrol vehicle and read his Miranda rights. He agreed to speak with the officer saying he and his family are going through a tough time and that he thought it was a joke that his father filed the grand larceny report. He indicated that he needed help and therefore went to his parent's house, walked in and took the keys to the truck.

In other felony-related arrests:

A 25-year-old Carson City man, Ryan Jon Smith, was arrested Feb. 28, 9:42 p.m. in the 1400 block of Rand Avenue on suspicion of felony possessing a dangerous drug without a prescription and two misdemeanor traffic-related charges.

According to the arrest report, Sgt. Humphrey with the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team was conducing surveillance at a known drug activity location. While watching the area, a Chevy pickup arrived and parked in front of the residence. One male subject that had been the driver and a female passenger got out of the truck and then walked into the residence. The same two subjects then left about 10 minutes later and drove away, the arrest report states.

Sgt. Humphrey followed the vehicle as it went southbound on Marian and then eastbound on Long Street and then southbound on Rand. The officer could not see any white light around the license plate as required at night. The vehicle also failed to come to a complete stop on Long Street at the intersection of Rand. The officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the parking lot of a gas station and contacted the driver, Smith, who is on Alternative Sentencing. The officer asked the man about being on Alternative Sentencing and Smith stated he knew he was on pretrial supervision for a recent DUI arrest.

The officer asked Smith and his passenger to step out of the vehicle, explaining to them that he had a police service K9 that is trained to sniff for illegal drugs. The officer told Smith that he was going to have the K9 sniff the outside of the vehicle. The officer explained to both subjects that he had concerns since they were coming from a known drug location and because of Smith's past history of arrest for illegal drugs. Smith stated he understood and then gave the officer permission to check the vehicle.

The officer retrieved the K9, which did not give alerts to the vehicle. The officer then did an interior check of the vehicle and found 10 small white pills tucked between the seat. The pills were identified as Tramadol, 50mg available by prescription only. A deputy then confronted Smith about the drugs, in which the man stated he just bought them and did not have a prescription. He was arrested on the charge of felony possession of prescription drugs without a prescription and misdemeanor charges of not having a lighted lamp on his license plate and failure to stop at a stop sign. Bail: $2,684.

— A 34-year-old Dayton man, James Burnside, was arrested Feb. 28, 8:36 p.m. in the 2200 block of East William Street. He was arrested on suspicion of being in violation of probation, a felony, and a warrant for misdemeanor violation of a suspended sentence. SET officers stopped a vehicle for a broken tail light and spoke with the driver and the occupants of the vehicle, with the rear passenger identified as Burnside.

The officer had dispatch check him for wants and warrants, which they advised Burnside was on parole and probation. Dispatch also advised P&P which requested a hold be place for him for probation violation and a warrant issued Oct. 1, 2010 for failure to obtain a substance abuse evaluation, appear to pay fines, fees and community service. Bail: $1,000 for the misdemeanor warrant charge; no bail hold for the felony charge of probation violation.

— A 42-year-old Carson City woman was arrested March 1, 9:22 a.m. in the 300 block of Clear Creek Avenue. Terri Lynn Zittel faces a felony charge of being in possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of bail conditions.

According to the arrest report, officers responded to the address in reference to a stolen vehicle and or stolen property being at the location. Once on the scene, officers knocked on the door and a female identified as Zittel, said come in. The officers entered the house and the woman met them in the hallway with her son.
The officers informed the woman why they were there and she gave them permission to check inside and outside the home for stolen property, the arrest report states.

In the living room, in plain view, a deputy found white powdery residue along with methamphetamine pipes. Dispatch advised the woman was on Alternative Sentencing with conditions of search and seizure for drugs and drug paraphernalia. Deputy Bindley contacted Alternative Sentencing Officer Gonzalez and advised her of the drugs and drug paraphernalia. Officer Gonzalez allowed the officers to exercise a search and seizure clause. The officers searched the woman's room where inside an ashtray next to the bed was a metal pipe with burnt marijuana residue. Deputy Bindley tested the substances found which tested positive for meth. The woman was arrested. Bail: $6,637.

Those arrested and facing charges are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
