No DUI checkpoints in Carson City this New Year's Eve but heavy patrol presence guaranteed

Law enforcement around Carson City and Northern Nevada will be in "saturation" mode throughout the day and into the new year looking for suspected DUI drivers.

While there won't be any specific checkpoints led by the Carson City Sheriff's Office or the Nevada Highway Patrol, staffing has been increased due to the holiday.

Of concern for NHP is the volume of DUI arrests this December compared to 2019. According to NHP Trooper Hannah DeGoey, there have been 70 DUI arrest in the Reno and Carson City areas this month compared to December 2019 where there were 41.

"It’s disappointing to see the number of DUI arrests increase so dramatically this December. Troopers have made 70 DUI arrests as of this morning over December 2019’s 41 DUI arrests," said Trooper DeGoey. "On average, troopers statewide make 105 DUI arrests on New Year’s Eve. When you get behind the wheel and you’re impaired, you’re jeopardizing the lives of your fellow Nevadans sharing the road with you and it’s unacceptable."

She advises revelers and motorists to "be a smart and responsible drive and make those plans to get home ahead of time. Even though 2020 has been a year where everything has been different, one thing that has remained the same is Nevada Highway Patrol’s commitment to stopping impaired drivers. If you suspect that someone is impaired, call *NHP immediately so we can get them off the road."

Around Carson City, Sheriff Ken Furlong said there will be additional staffing tonight and into Friday morning to look for DUI drivers.

In an announcement reiterated Wednesday, the CCSO Motor Unit advised it is joining forces with other Nevada law enforcement agencies to enforce impaired driving laws and keep impaired drivers off of Nevada roadways.

"If you’re attending a party or getting together with family or friends to celebrate please remember to celebrate responsibly, don't drink and drive, or please designate a sober driver — because that's what heroes do," according to the CCSO Motor Unit.

Elsewhere, throughout Carson Valley and at Lake Tahoe, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will have a high presence, along with numerous other law enforcement agencies, including Nevada Highway Patrol, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, and California Highway Patrol, according to a news release. Supporting agencies include the Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, Douglas County Communications Center, Tahoe-Douglas Fire Department, Cal-Trans and Nevada Department of Transportation.

DCSO has also ramped up efforts to insure public safety for visitors and residences during the New Year’s Eve celebrations happening in Stateline at Lake Tahoe. With statewide directives in place and no planned events at the Lake Tahoe casino corridor, law enforcement is anticipating there will still be crowds.
