Cold Shot Carson City: Temperatures to plunge into 20s prompting Freeze Watch
Scattered rain and snow showers remain possible with a very chilly airmass that is spreading over Carson City and much of western Nevada, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Freeze Watch for late Friday through Saturday morning.
Localized snow accumulations may occur in the mountains with widespread frosts and freezes are likely Saturday morning. Areas Impacted: include Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton, Silver Springs, Stagecoach, Virginia City, suburbs of Reno-Sparks, around Fallon, Lovelock and agricultural areas in Pershing County, Sierra Valley, Susanville and lower elevations of Lassen County.
Low temperatures Saturday morning are projected to be in the 20s to near 30 for these areas. This coupled with light winds and clear skies will result in frost and freeze impacts, according to the weather service.
This is potentially the first widespread frost and freeze for many areas this fall. Sensitive vegetation will likely be damaged if not protected, the weather service advises. Some above ground irrigation systems could also suffer damage if not drained or protected.
A Freeze Watch means sub-freezing temperatures are possible. These conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. A Freeze Warning will be issued once confidence increases to high that widespread sub-freezing temperatures will occur.
A gradual warming is expected next week as high pressure builds in, with minimal risk of storms or strong winds.
