The Vikings Are Coming to Diamond Peak's 2nd Annual Ullr Fest January 21-23, 2011
Location
With all the recent snow, it seems that Diamond Peak Ski Team's community-based homage to the Norse ski-god Ullr (pronounced Oool-er) is paying off. We've seen nothing but snow since the first annual Ullr Fest took place last winter. Ullr must be happy!
Ullr is the god of skiing, good times, and games in the snow. In Norse mythology, Ullr is a son of Sif and a stepson of Thor. He was a major god in prehistoric times, but there is little written of him which adds to his mystique. When you have that amazing run, where your string of turns make you feel invincible, it is an "Ullr moment".
Idolizing Ullr has been popular in Europe for the last century. Here in the US, ski towns and resorts have more recently been holding celebrations in his honor. DPST has brought Ullr Fest to Incline and Diamond Peak and aim to make this a fun annual festival. Diamond Peak Ski Resort enjoys hosting. Milena Regos, Diamond Peak Marketing Director, says, "This is a great event for the community to support the ski team and enjoy the fantastic setting and facilities at Diamond Peak."
Legend has it that Ullr was such a great skier that he would streak across the sky leaving brilliant stars as his trails. If you missed last year's Torch Light Parade, you missed quite a show of the ski team's brilliant stars creating a trail of spectacular bright orange streaks across the mountain. The Torch Light Parade is back again along with many other great activities at this year's event.
The merriment in Ullr's honor is January 21-23, 2011. The 2nd Annual Ullr Fest will span 3 days at Diamond Peak Ski Resort. Activities include an Opening Ceremony, Bonfire, Marshmallow Roasting, Torch Light Parade, Pub Crawl, Costume Contest, Ullr Games, Ski Race, Poker Tournament, and Closing Ceremonies. The main event on Saturday, January 22nd is an evening of live music, dinner, and dancing, with a silent and live auction. Get your viking gear in order and your skis tuned, and come celebrate our wonderful winter environment.
