Outdoors with Don Q: Things you may not know about Nevada

I've been busy as a bee, roaming all over the Internet, gathering information about all kinds of things that you may not know about Nevada. Here is a sample of what I found:

Storm brings much-needed snow to Lake Tahoe ski resorts, more on the way

Lake Tahoe area ski resorts report anywhere from 8 to 24 inches of new snow from the first wave of storms to hit the Sierra Friday and Saturday. Another storm is expected to arrive late Sunday.

Sierra-at-Tahoe reports 10 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours. Heavenly received anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of snow overnight allowing them to open two new runs, High Five and Double Down.

Other entities participating will be the 9th Civil Support Team from Los Angeles, Placer County HAZMAT Team, Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad, Washoe County Consolidated Bomb Squad, and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District.

North Lake Tahoe launches free ski shuttle

Getting to North Lake Tahoe’s snowy ski slopes just got a whole lot easier with the launch of the region's first area-wide free ski shuttle serving North Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Donner Summit.

The service runs between area lodging properties to 9 different ski resorts on weekends and holiday weeks now through March 31. It was formed through a collaboration of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association in partnership with the Truckee/North Tahoe Transportation Management Association and Placer County, the town of Truckee and several ski resorts.

The peaceful adrenaline of Paragliding over Tahoe

Is it possible to be thrilled and relaxed at the same time?

I learned the answer to this question hanging beneath the canopy of a paraglider as it soared several hundred feet over the forested ridge that runs along the border between California and Nevada on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.

The excitement of flying through the air under an oversized parachute was matched only by the peaceful beauty of the blue lake below. It's a vantage point that might have left the great Mark Twain speechless.

Leap Day turns to Wind Day

It only comes once every four years, Leap Day. And today we get high winds and snow. Joe Childs from CarsonWeather.com said he recorded an 83 mph gust at 9:45 this morning.

With the coming snowstorm in this season of drought, I'm sure there are some of you out there (like me) who were looking forward to hitting the slopes today. By chance, there are $29 Leap Day specials at Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows and Diamond Peak. However, the wind has closed the upper mountain areas. The Leap Day curse.

'Last Tracks' begins at Diamond Peak, prepare to have lots of fun

Here's one of the more fun invites for the snowsport season from Diamond Peak in Incline Village. I've done this a couple of times and it is a great outing, with wine and snacks and one of the best views of Lake Tahoe around that lake. And the ski or ride down at the end of it all is exhilerating. I'll be there one of these weekends. See you at the Snowflake lodge!

Here's the skinny:

Diamond Peak's 2nd Annual Ullr Fest this weekend

Diamond Peak Ski Resort at Lake Tahoe's Incline Village will host its second annual Ullr Fest beginning Friday and lasting through the entire weekend.

The Vikings Are Coming to Diamond Peak's 2nd Annual Ullr Fest January 21-23, 2011

With all the recent snow, it seems that Diamond Peak Ski Team's community-based homage to the Norse ski-god Ullr (pronounced Oool-er) is paying off. We've seen nothing but snow since the first annual Ullr Fest took place last winter. Ullr must be happy!

Several Tahoe ski resorts to open this weekend

A handful of Lake Tahoe ski resorts prepare to open for the season this weekend thanks to an early snowfall, snowmaking guns and a fairly large storm set to punch the Sierra.

Around a foot or more of natural snow across the Sierra earlier this month certainly helped get things moving. With this weekend's anticipated storm, which may bring anywhere from 2-4 feet of snow to the Sierra, resorts should get a nice healthy boost just in time for the holiday season.

Here's what we know:
