Celebration of Arts on Sunday to launch Nevada governor inauguration of Brian Sandoval
The inauguration of Nevada's 29th governor, Brian Sandoval, will begin on Sunday with a celebration of arts in Carson City and then continue on Monday with the official ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on the steps of the state capitol.
Beginning on Sunday, Jan. 2, from 1 to 5 p.m., cultural organizations in downtown Carson City will open their doors to offer free music and dance performances, demonstrations by traditional artists, visual arts and history exhibitions, children’s activities and shopping opportunities.
A performing arts showcase will take place at the Brewery Arts Center from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The event is free, but seating is limited. Tickets can be obtained at the Brewery Arts Center. Call (775) 883-1976 for more information. Click here for tickets and here for the official website.
The Cultural Arts stroll will include activities at:
— Children's Museum of Northern Nevada - 813 North Carson Street
— Great Basin Gallery and Frame - 110 South Curry Street
— Nevada Arts Council - 716 North Carson Street (south side entrance)
— Nevada State Museum - 600 North Carson Street (enter thru Dema Guinn Concourse)
— The BRIC (Business Resource Innovation Center) and Capital City Arts Initiative - 108 E. Proctor St.
On Monday, Jan. 3, Sandoval and his family will begin the day with Mass at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Carson City at 9 a.m. The public is welcome to attend Mass with the first family.
At 11:30 a.m, the swearing-in ceremony for the governor-elect and other constitutional officers will begin on the front steps of the Capitol.
The grounds will open at 10:30 a.m., and Sandoval will be sworn in at noon.
From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., Governor and Mrs. Sandoval will hold a reception in the lobby of the Nevada State Library and Archives Building.
The following road closures will occur as a result of the events during the inauguration:
— Musser Street will be closed between Carson Street and Stewart Street from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
— Carson Street will be closed between Fifth Street and Robinson Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The governor's committee has also announced the locations for the inaugural balls. The Southern Nevada inaugural ball and dinner will be Friday, Jan. 28, at Wynn Las Vegas. The Northern Nevada inaugural ball and dinner will be Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Silver Legacy.
