Nine Carson City area student winners announced for American Citizen Essay Contest

The Carson City School District’s Board of Trustees is pleased to announce nine student winners of the 19th Annual American Citizen Essay Contest. Each winner will be recognized at the school board meeting Tuesday, Nov. 24, and will received the following cash prizes: First Place: $80, Second Place: $30 and Third Place: $15. Box with wire, cable found at Carson City church parking lot prompts bomb squad safety check

An unidentified box with a wire sticking out of it was discovered Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community on Lompa Lane, prompting the Carson City Sheriff's Office to contact the Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad due to the suspicion nature of the package.

Capitol FFA traveled to North Valleys High School Feb. 1 in order to compete in the Northern FFA Zone Competition. Tiffani Barber was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer on Dec. 8, 2012. For those who did not know Tiffani, all she ever wanted to do was help people. She carried water and snacks in her car to give to the homeless and people less fortunate than her.

Catherine Diane Mattoon, age 59, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family March 14, 2019. She was born September 18, 1959 in Burbank, California to Ronald and Diane Wonser.

At age 18 on October 1, 1977 she married the love of her life, Mark Mattoon. Catherine is survived by her husband and children: Mark Jr., Brian, Heather, Matthew, Stephanie and Christopher and her five grandchildren.

The 2019 Spelling Bee is underway, and Carson City will be sending four young people to the Nevada State Bee which will be held in Las Vegas on March 9.

Our Local Bee was held January 30 at Bethlehem Lutheran School. Representing Carson City will be 5th grader Noel White from Bethlehem Lutheran School, 6th grader Samantha Badger from Carson Montessori, 7th grader Emily Phillips from St. Teresa of Avila and 8th grader Hayden Steyn from Bethlehem Lutheran School.

Samantha and Hayden are repeat winners from last year and look forward to advancing further in the bee this year.

Catering provided by Liberty Events & Catering. There will be dinner, dancing, raffle prizes, silent and live auctions. Tickets available now and are $75 per person and can be purchased online or at the school's front office. The school is located at 567 S. Richmond Street, Carson City.
