Washoe Lake State Park events feature full moon and winter solstice hikes, holiday slide show

NEW WASHOE CITY, Nev. – December programs at Washoe Lake include a full moon hike, a winter solstice hike, and a Christmas-themed slide presentation. Reservations are required only for the full moon hike.
Full Moon Hike: This is 2017’s only “super moon!” A super moon happens when the full moon is at its closest point to the earth during its orbit. The moon will appear larger and brighter than normal. Join park staff for a moderate 1.5 mile, round-trip hike to the gazebo on the Deadman’s Creek trail. Participants should dress warmly, wear good hiking shoes and bring a flashlight. Reservations are required for this hike and are limited to 30 people. Call 775-687-4319 or e-mail washoelake@hdiss.net to reserve your spot.
WHEN: Sunday, December 3, 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.
WHERE: Meet at the Maze parking lot inside the park. Take Exit 44 from I-580 and drive north on Eastlake Blvd. approximately four miles. The park entrance is on the left. Turn left past the fee booth and the maze is the first parking lot on the right.
COST: The park entrance fee is $7 per vehicle, with a $2 discount for Nevada residents. Please use the self-pay station at the park entrance. Cash or check only.

Winter Solstice Hike: Join park staff for a hike at dusk on the shortest day of the year. This is a moderate three mile, round-trip hike on the South Loop Equestrian Trail. Because this hike falls close to the new moon, participants will have dark skies for viewing winter constellations (weather permitting). Dress warmly, wear good hiking shoes and bring a flashlight.
WHEN: Thursday, December 21, 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
WHERE: Meet at the Equestrian Pavilion inside the park. Take Exit 44 from I-580 and drive north on Eastlake Blvd. approximately four miles. The park entrance will be on the left. Turn right past the fee booth, pass the campground and follow the short gravel road to the Equestrian Pavilion.
COST: The park entrance fee is $7 per vehicle with a $2 discount for Nevada residents. Please use the self-pay station at the park entrance. Cash or check only.

Christmas Past: Join park staff for a presentation on how Christmas has been celebrated over the years and learn a little about the history of some of our favorite Christmas traditions like Santa Claus, candy canes and Christmas trees. The park will share some Christmas scenes from around Northern Nevada and mining towns, including Virginia City and Tonopah. Hot chocolate and tea will be available.
WHEN: Saturday, December 23, 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.
WHERE: Meet at the park office for this program. Take Exit 44 from I-580 and drive north approximately four miles. The park office is on the right at 4855 Eastlake Blvd., Washoe Valley.
COST: This program is free, but donations are appreciated.
