The Change Place celebrates grand opening in Carson City

The Change Place in Carson City is no ordinary gym. In fact, it’s not a gym at all, said Don Kuhl, who co-owns the business with his wife, Sherry Newsom.

While there is gym equipment aplenty, aerobics, yoga, meditation, massage therapy, personal training and motivational conversations happen here, too.

Even the enormous gauntlet-style circuit system called The Rig isn’t your everyday ordinary work-out machine.

There are no weights on The Rig, just more than a dozen activities that provide for natural body movements. With enough individual stations for up to 17 people at once, clients can work out together, facing one another and encouraging each other along the way.

Kuhl said The Rig is designed to make exercise engaging, a team effort to achieve goals toward physical and/or emotional change, the veritable capstone of the Change Place.

Located at 2814 N. Carson Street next door to High Sierra Office Systems and adjacent to Eagle Medical Center, the Change Place celebrated its grand opening Tuesday with an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony attended by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and city officials.

Members of the Carson City Symphony orchestra provided live instrumental music, while hors d'oeuvres and refreshments were available to guests.

The massage therapy and meditation rooms were dressed for the occasion, too, with colorful boas draped over the doorways.

Whimsical sculptures and artwork placed throughout the establishment showed guests the depth with which the Change Place approaches wellness.

Feeling and being healthy aren't all about working out. There are emotional as well as physical components to well-being.

The Change Place is really about achieving the full spectrum of wellness through behavior change, a specialization that Kuhl and Newsom know a lot about.

The couple owns the Change Companies, a Carson City-based national innovator in the scientific field of behavior change.

They’ve been in the business for more than 25 years, so the Change Place is literally 10,000 square feet of positive behavior change under one roof.

Kuhl said this newest venture of theirs is both a way of giving back to the community and working directly with clients in pursuit of life changes.

Memberships cost $900 per year or $250 per quarter, said Kuhl, who hopes for an optimum number of 250 members.

Benefits to members include access to all of the wellness services offered at the Change Place, as well as a daily schedule of members-only classes.

There are also free motivational conversations held each day at the Change Place. Kuhl said these occur two to three times a day, covering a wide range of topics meant to help individuals on their journey toward behavior change.

The Change Place is open from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Visit the Change Place online here to learn more about what it offers or call 775-283-0699.
