Tiffani’s 5th annual Sealed Toy Drive begins with 17 drop off locations around Carson City
Tiffani’s 5th annual Sealed Toy Drive has commenced with 17 drop off locations in and around Carson City. The "sealed" toy drive allows hospitalized children who have to stay in their room, or are unable to play with used toys, a chance to receive a small gift basket of toys and games to play with over the holidays.
Some children are affected by Neutropenia, an abnormally low count of a type of white blood cells that causes an increased vulnerability to infection. This is why used toys can not be accepted.
On Dec. 8, 2012 Tiffani Barber was diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumor. She found herself at age 24 in the fight for her life.
Following her diagnosis she spent a lot of time at Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. The Stanford Institution provides care to patients up to age 26. She would play and make things for the children that could leave their rooms.
One time, Tiffani and her sister, Bailee, crafted lollipops with mustaches for more than 100 kids. Tiffani was also near the children who couldn’t leave their rooms because of neutropenia. She started pondering ways she could help them even though they couldn’t accept crafted gifts or play with used toys.
Around Nov. 2013 she was back in the hospital for yet another surgery, and from her hospital bed she started planning. She quickly brought in help from her sister, and together they held the first sealed toy drive.
Bailee dropped crates and boxes at various establishments around town while Tiffani was busy in her hospital room organizing, and spreading the word on social media.
When Tiffani found out that her cancer was terminal she turned to her family and urged them to continue this tradition. On May 28, 2014 Tiffani Barber lost her battle. Going forward, Bailee has been working hard and doing her best to honor Tiffani’s request with the support from family, friends and the community. The toys are donated, collected and delivered to children every year for the holidays.
The community can support this cause by leaving (new and sealed) toys at one of the drop-box locations by Dec. 3rd listed below:
