Tiffani Barber was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer on Dec. 8, 2012. For those who did not know Tiffani, all she ever wanted to do was help people. She carried water and snacks in her car to give to the homeless and people less fortunate than her.

A local Christmas toy drive that began six years ago by a Carson City woman dying of cancer continues through this weekend, ending Sunday as part of her last wishes the drive continue after her death.

So it was no surprise to those closest to her that when the social worker assigned to her case asked her what she needed, Tiffani replied with, "How can I help?"

The Salvation Army is collecting school supplies and back packs for children in need through August 20. Children from Carson City, Douglas County and the surrounding communities will receive school supplies and back packs as needed.

Tiffani’s 5th annual Sealed Toy Drive has commenced with 17 drop off locations in and around Carson City. The "sealed" toy drive allows hospitalized children who have to stay in their room, or are unable to play with used toys, a chance to receive a small gift basket of toys and games to play with over the holidays.

The Salvation Army is collecting school supplies and backpacks for at-risk children through August 14. Children from Carson City, Douglas County and the surrounding communities will receive school supplies and backpacks as needed.

The Salvation Army is collecting backpacks and school supplies for disadvantaged children through August 17. Children from Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County will receive backpacks and school supplies as needed. The Salvation Army will have a distribution of the back packs and a large portion of the back packs collected will be given directly to the School Districts for distribution to children in transition.

With an impressive 135 toys collected, MJ's Sports Bar in Carson City won the Battle of the Bars Toy Drive hosted by the Salvation Army. Crossroad's Lounge collected 79 new toys, placing second in the competition, with Ed's Doghouse collecting 63.

The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Christmas program will benefit from the third annual Battle of the Bars Toy Drive. Local bars and taverns have been collecting toys since late November and will push for a final count at 6 p.m. Saturday. Salvation Army officials will be “Bar Hopping” in the afternoon and evening picking up toys and thanking everyone for their support of this Toy Drive.

The Salvation Army is collecting Back Packs and School Supplies for disadvantaged children through August 13th. The Salvation Army has been getting calls from families in need for several weeks asking for help. Children from Carson City School District, Silver State Charter School, and Douglas County School District will receive all back packs and school supplies that are collected.

The 5th annual CHS Safe and Sober 5k Run/Walk was a tremendous success with turn-out of 113 participants. The weather cleared up this morning and with just a bit of wind at race time, we couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather, maybe even a sunburn.

The 5th Annual Cancer Sucks 5k held last month and presented by The Sierra Nevada Association of REALTORS® and PrimeLending was a huge success! The event brought out over 320 walkers and runners, many adorned in the color pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month. The proceeds from the event totaled close to $8,000 and will benefit local cancer patients through The Carson Tahoe Health Foundation.

The Carson High School "Cheer Me Up" cards are on sale now and feature 41 different Carson City businesses that are offering discounts on services, food and merchandise through April 2014.

A father of 5, loving husband, and devoted Christian, is in the hospital right now after suffering multiple strokes and will be needing spinal/brain surgery. He was diagnosed with Klippel-Feil syndrome. This is a rare disorder in which the spine has abnormalities in it that are formed in the womb. His skull and first two vertebrates are fused together, and multiple more further down his spine. The abnormality is putting pressure on part of his brain. He currently has no health insurance. CARSON CITY, NV – January 7, 2011 – Over twelve million children go hungry in America every day, thousands right here in the State of Nevada. In an effort to contribute to feeding the hungry children in our community, Anytime Fitness of Carson City will donate $10 for each new membership this month to Food for Thought, a local non-profit organization that provides weekend meals to over 800 children in our community. Many of our children only receive the food they need during the school week.
