Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report for week of Oct. 17-23

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Oct. 17-23, 2016. Work will continue on the Downtown Corridor improvement project on Carson Street. The following streets will be impacted:

— Carson Street will be closed between Musser and Fifth on Monday only.
— Fifth Street is open to east and westbound traffic, Musser Street is open to east and westbound traffic.
— Robinson will be closed at Carson Street, both east and west side for the week, Monday through Friday.
— Carson Street will be open north and southbound Tuesday through Friday.

Days of closures subject to change due to weather issues. Downtown businesses are open during construction. For details regarding traffic impacts, including a road closure, please refer to the material provided in local media outlets or go to carsonproud.com for more information. These sources are updated weekly throughout the duration of the project.

Shelter Insurance, along with all the businesses in the Southgate business shopping center, will be affected by some parking lot renovations this upcoming Sunday and Monday, Oct. 16 and 17. All businesses in the shopping center will remain open during their normal business hours, but customers should plan ahead for parking.

Lane closures with traffic controls are at the following locations due to utility/road work:
— U.S. Highway 395 between Old Clear Creek Road and Snyder Avenue will have single and double lane closures in both directions, Monday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
— U.S. Highway 395 between Old Clear Creek Road and Snyder Avenue will have a single northbound lane closed, Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
— Winnie Lane will be narrowed between Mountain Street and Michael Drive, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
— Long Street will be closed between Roop and Marian Streets, Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
— Snyder Avenue at the intersection of Bigelow Drive will be reduced to one lane, Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
— College Parkway access onto and off I-580 will have lane reductions, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
— Research Way and College Parkway intersection will have traffic controls, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Road closures expected at the following locations due to utility/road work. Please follow detours:
— Robinson Street will be closed between Carson and Stewart streets, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
— Topsy Lane will be closed between Center Drive and U.S. Highway 395, Monday through Sunday, for all hours, local traffic only.
— Bigelow Drive will be closed to through traffic at Snyder Avenue all week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The following Lake Tahoe and Sierra area road report from Caltrans is for the week of Oct. 9-15, 2016:
State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from Fallen Leaf Lake Road to Vikingsholm Vista Point is closed in both directions indefinitely due to fire damage.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.

October 17-21 State Route 89 (Placer County) from Oak Street to Cherry Street and from St. Michael’s Court to Sugar Pine Road Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to noon Friday for grinding and curb and gutter work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $13 million water quality improvement project from Cascade Road to the Eagle Falls Viaduct over Emerald Bay. The project is constructing new drainage facilities to treat stormwater runoff and repaving a four-mile section of the highway.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from Cascade Road to Upper Emerald Bay Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for shoulder work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $25 million project from the "Y" junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson. Curb, gutter and sidewalks are being built in the 1.1-mile four-lane section, and the highway will be widened in the two-lane section to Visitor Center Road to provide 4-foot paved shoulders on each side. Drainage systems are also being built and the roadway is being resurfaced. Completion is expected this fall.

State Route 28 (Placer County): Work continues on Placer County’s $50 million Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project from State Route 267 to Chipmunk Street. Highway work includes installing curb and gutter, sidewalks, roundabouts, lighting and drainage systems to enhance pedestrian and bicycle mobility, improve safety and provide water-quality improvements. Completion is expected this fall.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Beach Avenue to Deer Street: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Wednesday for utility work. Motorists also can expect one-way traffic control from Fox Street to Beaver Street from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday for utility work.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Rocky Ridge Road to Lake Forest Road East: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday for utility work.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Lake Forest Road East to Beaver Street: Motorists can expect intermittent full highway closures from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday for survey work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from 5 Mile Road/Paul Bunyan Road to 8 Mile Road/Cedar Grove: Eastbound motorists can expect left-turn pockets closed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekends during Apple Hill season for safety reasons during Apple Hill season.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Strawberry Lodge Drive to Johnson Pass Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday for pavement striping.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) at Baljibou Road: Eastbound motorists can expect the #2 lane closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday for curb, gutter and sidewalk work.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from the Truckee River “Fanny” Bridge to Fairway Drive in Tahoe City: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday for crack sealing.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from West River Street to the Truckee River Bridge in Olympic Valley: Motorists can expect intermittent one-way traffic control at various locations from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for tree work.

State Route 193 (El Dorado County) at the South Fork of the American River/Chili Bar: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday for bridge work.

State Route 267 (Placer County) from Carnelian Bay Avenue to the junction with State Route 28 in Kings Beach: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Friday for recessed pavement striping.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Brace Road to Magra Road: Work is nearly completed on the $36 million project which increased the vertical clearance of nine bridge structures in south Placer County to 16 feet, 6 inches.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) in a one-mile section under and adjacent to the Brace Road overcrossing: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures as electrical sensors are installed in the roadway. No traffic interfering work scheduled for this week.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Long Ravine underpass to .2 miles east of Magra Road overcrossing: Roadwork begins for the 2.5 year, $50.6 million project to construct @ 3 miles of additional ‘truck climbing lane’ and other improvements to primarily eastbound I-80 east of Colfax including widening the Cape Horn under crossing bridge.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) at the Cape Horn Undercrossing Bridge: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls for around-the-clock alternating lane closures from June 20 throughout the summer for bridge work.

Interstate 80 - Eastbound (Placer County) from Hwy 174/I-80 junction to Secret Town overcrossing (Magra & Alpine): Motorists can expect overnight right lane and shoulder closures from 6 p.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday October 17-21 for roadway excavation.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Placer County) from Hwy 174/I-80 junction to Secret Town overcrossing (Magra & Alpine): Motorists can expect overnight moving lane and shoulder closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday night through Thursday morning Oct. 18-20 for bridge work.

State Route 20 (Nevada County) from Yuba County line to Penn Valley Drive: Motorists can expect overnight moving one way traffic controls from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday night through Friday morning Oct. 16-21 for striping operations.

State Route 20 (Nevada County) from I-80/Hwy 20 junction to Scott’s Flat Road: Motorists can expect alternating lane closures and one way traffic controls from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday Oct. 17-21 for tree work.

State Route 49 (Sierra County) from Oak Valley Road to Yuba Pass summit: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday October 17-20 for tree work.

Interstate 80 (Nevada County) at the Indian Springs undercrossing: Motorists can expect full ramp closure from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday Oct. 17-21 for tree work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from the Illinoistown overcrossing/Canyon Way to Weimar Cross Road: Motorists can expect lane and shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Oct. 17-21 for culvert replacement operations.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Emigrant Gap overhead to Kingvale undercrossing: Motorists can expect alternating lane and shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastbound – Monday through Thursday and Westbound - Tuesday through Friday Oct. 17-21 for tree work.

Interstate 80 - Westbound (Nevada County) at Donner Summit rest area: Motorists can expect partial ramp closure from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday Oct. 17 for electrical work.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Nevada County) at the Truckee scales: Motorists can expect a right shoulder closure from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday & Tuesday Oct. 17-18 for electrical work.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Nevada County) at the Eagle Lakes off ramp: Motorists can expect full ramp closure from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday Oct. 18-21 for tree work.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Placer County) at the Hampshire Rocks undercrossing (Rainbow): Motorists can expect full ramp closure from 7 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Oct. 17-21 for tree work.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Nevada County) from the Truckee River Bridge #12 to the Hirschdale exit: Motorists can expect right lane and shoulder closures from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday October 18 for shoulder work.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Placer County) at the Floriston exit: Motorists can expect right shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday October 18 for electrical work.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Placer County) at the Gold Run overcrossing: Motorists can expect full eastbound on-ramp closures from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday October 17-21 for roadway excavation.

State Route 89 (Nevada County) from Prosser Dam Road to Sage Hen Road: Motorists can expect intermittent one way traffic controls from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday October 17-20 for tree work.

State Route 89 (Sierra County) from Sierraville to Sattley: Motorists can expect right shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday Oct. 17-19 for utility work.

State Route 89 (Sierra County) from Webber Lake/Cottonwood Creek Road to the Nevada County line: Motorists can expect intermittent one way traffic controls from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday Oct. 17-20 for tree work.

State Route 193 (Placer County) from Fowler Road to Rainbow Valley Lane: Motorists can expect around the clock, 24-hour one way traffic control and right shoulder restrictions from 6 a.m. Sunday October 16 to 6 a.m. Saturday October 22 for highway construction.

State Route 193 (Placer County) from Summer Star/Armes Lane to Ophir Road/I-80 interchange: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday & Thursday Oct. 19-20 for tree work.

A 51-year-old Reno woman was arrested Sunday for suspicion of DUI second, expired registration and open container, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

UPDATE 4:30PM: Four very small fires, amounting to less than a tenth of an acre, were knocked down within 10 minutes of arrival Sunday along the hillside near Lone Mountain Cemetery, said Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Mason.

The cause is under investigation. No structures were damaged. CCFD has determined the fires to be human caused. At this time, the matter is under investigation with CCFD and the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Three engines and a rescue were assigned to the attack. East Fork Fire assisted for protection on the south side of the city, while Truckee Meadows Fire stood by for protection on the north side of the city.

UPDATE 3:11PM: Some fire engines have cleared the scene, a good sign CCFD has control of the fire. We have left messages and will update as the battalion chief becomes available.

Man can be awful cruel to man, and from time immemorial we continue to come up with new ways to exact our cruelty. The first novel ambush that caught my attention was described in the Odyssey, where Greek soldiers were able to take the city of Troy by hiding inside a giant horse parked at the city gates as an offering to the goddess Athena.

A new Lake Tahoe Regional Evacuation Plan has been developed through a collaboration between Lake Tahoe fire chiefs, law enforcement agencies, and emergency management personnel. The plan, released earlier this month, was created using a diverse team of experts from two states and five counties, using experiences gained during past major wildfires.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, club members and folks interested in membership are invited to attend the annual Member’s Day at Capitol City Gun Club in Carson City from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Nevada author Stephen H. Provost explores the history of one of the West’s most fascinating frontier regions in his new two-volume set on Virginia City and the Comstock Lode.

Members of the Rotary Club of Carson City enjoyed a tour of the Nevada State Capitol Building this week. The tour was part of the club’s commitment to fostering strong community connections.

USGS and Nevada Seismological Lab report an earthquake Saturday morning at 8:32 a.m. 11.3 miles south of Topaz Lake in Mono County, Calif.

USGS reports a 3.55 rounded to 3.6 magnitude earthquake, while Nevada Seismological Lab has a reading of 3.50.
