Things to do around Carson City on Sunday, Sept. 9
If your Sunday plans are still up in the air, consider a short trip to Reno very early in the morning to catch the final day of the 2018 Great Reno Balloon Race. Glow Show and Dawn Patrol start around 4:30 a.m. and Mass Ascension takes place by 6:30 a.m.
Sunday is also the final day of competition, ludicrous as it is, for the 59th annual International Camel and Ostrich Races in Virginia City. Races run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Finish off your Sunday down at Heritage Park in Gardnerville for a taste of Bavaria at the 27th annual Sertoma Oktoberfest celebration.

— Daily through September, Muscle Powered is holding a membership drive to recruit new members. All new and renewing members in the month of September will be entered in a drawing to win a Gregory Hiking Day Pack.
Muscle Powered works to make Carson City healthier for all citizens and safer and more accessible for bicycling and walking through education and advocacy, the promotion of bicycle and pedestrian friendly infrastructure, and developing and maintaining recreational trails throughout the city. Muscle Powered is also responsible for organized weekly walks, hikes and bike rides, on and off road, throughout Carson City. Go here to learn more and sign up.
— 2018 Great Reno Balloon Race, Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno, accessed off Sierra Street one block west of the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Glow Show and Dawn Patrol start around 4:30 a.m., followed by Mass Ascension around 6:30 a.m. Visit renoballoon.com for a schedule of events and for parking instructions.
Sunday is also Girl Scout Day at the 2018 GRBR. Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada will host their ultimate balloon scavenger hunt adventure from 5-7 a.m. Girls will meet balloon pilots, help clean the park, and join other Girl Scouts from across their council.
— Muscle Powered Weekly Bike Ride. Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Road, next to the Linear Ditch Trail at 8 a.m. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes.
— 59th International Camel and Ostrich Races, Virginia City Arena and Fairgrounds, 458 F. Street in Virginia City, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. General Admission$15; Kids (3-12)/Seniors $12; Premium Shaded Seating $25; VIP Seating $55.
— Redemption Church 70th Anniversary celebration, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1600 Snyder Avenue.
— Celebrate the new look of CenterPoint Christian Church, 100 Breakwater Drive in Dayton with a community barbecue at 11 a.m.
— 27th annual Sertoma Oktoberfest, Heritage Park, 1447 Courthouse Alley in Gardnerville from 12-4:30 p.m. Event is free to attend and lots of great food, drink, children's games, and craft vendors.
