Carson City arrests: Man steals car dealership checkbook, attempts to cash $3,200 at bank

A 37-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday after allegedly attempting to cash a $3,200 check he had stolen earlier from the desk of a car dealership manager, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

George Hudson was booked on felony suspicion of possession of a forged instrument and uttering a forged instrument after being taken into custody at a Molly Drive residence. According to the arrest report, a deputy was dispatched to the car dealership in the 5900 block of Highway 50 East and spoke to the manager who said the suspect had been at the lot and wanted to test drive a vehicle.

When they the suspect and the manager sat down to discuss financing, the manager informed Hudson he would have to see two recent pay stubs before they could proceed. The suspect left the dealership. Later the manager began looking for the checkbook, which he usually leaves on his desk. The checkbook was issued to the dealership and the manager couldn’t find it, according to the arrest report.

He called Mutual of Omaha bank to report the checkbook lost or stolen. The manager was advised by a teller that a man had been to the location and attempted to cash a $3,200 check from the car dealership but was denied because he didn’t have a photo ID. The bank account was closed and the bank manager alerted the sheriff’s office of the incident.

The bank manager confirmed the situation with the deputy and also said the suspect had returned a second time with an older man and tried to cash the same check again. By then the bank had already flagged and closed the account. A photo of the vehicle was taken. Deputies responded to the Molly Drive address.

The officer arrived at the residence, which was the suspect’s parents home. The parents confirmed they had driven their son to the dealership earlier in the day and drove him to the bank so he could cash a check. The man’s mother told the deputy she had no idea her son was attempting to cash a check he had stolen from the dealership. The father confirmed he drove his son back to the bank the second time and thought his son was trying to open an account there. The father was also unaware his son was trying to cash a stolen check, according to the arrest report.

Hudson exited the residence and was read his Miranda Warning. He agreed to speak and confirmed he had gone to the dealership earlier to test drive a vehicle. At first he denied stealing anything and said he had no idea what the officer was talking about when told of the investigation. He told the officer he had been home, napping for several hours.

He then grew angry and stated the sheriff’s office had impounded his vehicle and left him without transportation. He said he was also angry about his financial situation his ex-wife left him in and spoke of how everyone was out to get him, the arrest report states.

Hudson then said he found two blank checks in the vehicle he test drove and took them. He also confirmed he went to Mutual of Omaha but said he only tried to open an account. He then said the car dealership wrote him a check for $3,200, the arrest report states.

When the officer told him bank employees witnessed him trying to pass the stolen check, he admitted to writing the check out to himself and trying to cash it but denied taking the entire check book, the arrest report states. He then grew angry at the officer and stated he would do his time and it was no big deal as he just got out of prison not too long ago. He was taken to the jail and booked.

A short time later dispatch received a called from the man’s parents who advised they found the stolen checkbook in their son’s hygiene bag. Deputies returned to the residence and met with the parents who handed over the stolen checkbook from the car dealership. The parents told the officer they were very disappointed with their son and said they made arrangements to get him to Carson City after he was released from prison in Alabama. They said they were tired of their son's life of crime and wanted him to change. Bail: $15,352.

— A 55-year-old Carson City man, Dariene Rhodes, was arrested Thursday, 5:19 p.m. in the 4700 block of South Carson Street for suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $3,632.

— A 49-year-old female transient, Kimberly Dawn Gragg, was arrested Thursday, 10:44 a.m. in the 100 block of Koontz in Carson City on three felony fugitive from justice warrants out of Utah. She has a no bail hold awaiting extradition.

— A 47-year-old Carson City man, David Bryan Spencer, was arrested Thursday, 12:25 p.m. in the area of Roop and Washington streets on a felony warrant issued August 7, alleging domestic battery. Bail: $15,000.

— A 31-year-old Carson City man was booked into Carson City jail Thursday on misdemeanor warrants of violation of pre-trial supervision, and two counts violation of a suspended sentence. Bail: $5,000.

— A 27-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Friday, 3:14 a.m. in the area of Saliman and East William on suspicion of second offense DUI, having an improperly displayed license plate and failure to maintain a lane of traffic. Bail: $2,649.
