NV Energy is urging customers to conserve electricity Tuesday and Wednesday between 2 and 9 p.m. in order to help offset energy supply issues caused by record-breaking heat throughout the Western United States. The utility has advised Lyon County that residents can expect rolling brownouts or blackouts starting today into tomorrow due to high temperatures.
According to Lyon County Manager Jeff Page, NV Energy alerted Lyon County that Silver Springs will see power out from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Yerington and Smith Valley from 8 to 9 p.m. Tuesday night.
It is unknown at this time whether Carson City, Douglas or Washoe County will be part of the rolling blackouts.

Conservation is the best way to reduce strain on the local power grid. Effective measures to conserve energy during this time period include:
— Turn off lights
— Turn off pool pumps
— Unplug appliances not in use
— Avoid cooking indoors on your stove or using the oven
— Use the microwave to cook or warm food
— Avoid using large electrical appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines and electric clothes dryers
— Adjust the thermostat to 78 degrees or higher to reduce the use of air conditioning during this time, barring any medical issues, and use ceiling fans to cool people and pets. Pre-cool your home prior to 2 p.m.
— Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible
— Close window coverings to keep the heat out
— Do not charge electric vehicles between 2 and 9 p.m.
NV Energy advises that it understands many people are home during this time due to the pandemic, and the utility apologizes for any inconvenience.
The utility says it appreciates any small changes that can be made to reduce energy use on these days.
"By conserving energy together we will help prevent the current Western United States energy supply shortage from escalating into a more serious reliability problem," according to an NV Energy news release.
