Headphones, ear buds banned from CHS campus; Fremont Elementary ditches uniforms
This year, Carson High School announced that earbuds and headphones will be banned from campus in an effort to create a better and safer learning environment.
“It’s a safety issue,” said Dan Davis of the Carson City School District. “While they’re on campus, if the principal or a teacher needs to audibly communicate with a student, they need to be able to hear them for safety reasons.”
In a letter sent to parents of high schoolers from Carson High School, representatives of the school also stated that when students have earbuds in, they miss valuable instructions or directions.
“It’s unclear at this time if a similar policy is in place at the middle schools or elementary schools,” said Davis.
While more schools are going toward uniforms or Standard Student Attire, Fremont Elementary School has left their uniforms behind.
“Whether or not a school has uniforms is decision made by each school site,” said Davis.
According to regulation No. 519.1, the uniform policies are in the hands of the principals and a committee of each school, but they also follow due diligence to seek feedback from parents, students and faculty, whether through an official survey, comments or advocation from parents. It’s a policy that is put in place and is reviewed every three years, said Davis.
At this time, Bordewich Bray Elementary, Empire Elementary, Seeliger Elementary, Carson Middle School, and Eagle Valley Middle School all conform to a Standard Student Attire policy.
While the high school and other schools don’t have a uniform policy, they still have a dress code and students should be “dressed modestly at school in order to promote a respectful and distraction-free learning environment,” according to the letter sent to parents.
School begins Monday, Aug. 19.
The letter from Carson High School to parents is as follows:
Hello Carson High Parents:
As the summer winds down, it’s time to start thinking about the new school year at Carson High. Here are some reminders to help you and your student prepare for the new school year. Additional details will be sent as email attachments.
Dress Code: There is no Standard Student Attire (or SSA) at Carson High; however, students should be dressed modestly at school in order to promote a respectful and distraction-free learning environment.
Student pick up and drop off: Due to the new bus routes, students may no longer be dropped off or picked up in the south parking lot. Student drop-off and pick up will take place only in the loop at the front of the school.
New electronics policy: For the safety and well-being of our students, earbuds and headphones will no longer be permitted on campus. When students have earbuds or headphones on, they miss valuable instructions and directions.
Skateboards: Absolutely no skateboarding is permitted on campus. Skateboards must be locked up during school hours and not be carried from class to class. Skateboard lockers are available at the front of the school.
School begins on Monday, August 19 at 7:40 a.m. It will be an all-periods day. Parents, please allow for extra time in the loop for student drop off. Traffic is always really busy in the morning, especially the first week of school.
We are looking forward to a wonderful school year!
