Governor appoints Stacey Montooth as Nevada Indian Commission Executive Director

Gov. Steve Sisolak announced the appointment Tuesday of Stacey Montooth to the Nevada Indian Commission where she will serve as executive director beginning Sept. 1, 2019.
“Stacey, a member of the Walker River Paiute Nation, has extensive experience in tribal relations in Nevada and understands first-hand the multitude of issues, including health services and K-12 education, facing the 27 tribes in our state,” Governor Sisolak said in a news release. “I am grateful for her past outstanding work in Nevada and look forward to her continued service to the Native American community.”
Montooth, of Reno, previously served as a Public Relations Officer for the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony. During her six-year tenure, she organized community events and implemented communications plans and campaigns on behalf of tribes and thousands of Native Americans.
Montooth also served as a crucial liaison for press inquiries as well as legislation involving key tribal issues, including health care and taxation. From 2009-2013, she served as the Indian Education Liaison for the Churchill County School District.
Montooth has a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri. She also holds several communications certifications, including the Advanced Public Information Office Endorsement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
She will replace Sherry Rupert, who was picked earlier this year to be the executive director of American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association, the nation’s leading national Native tourism organization.
