Carson City children are nearly out of school, and summer youth activities are back

This year, the last day of school in Carson City is held on June 3, 2021, and youth programming is back this summer after many programs had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 last year.

Here is a list of youth programming occurring in Carson City for the 2021 Summer season:

SUMMER DAY CAMPS
— Camp Carson begins June 14 for students entering Kindergarten through 6th grade, and offers indoor and outdoor activities that include STEAM programming, Arts and Crafts, Leave No Trace, Teambuilding, optional swim lessons and optional field trips every week. — Carson City Boys and Girls Club “Jukebox Summer” Summer Camp will begin June 7 through Aug. 6 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Carson City Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada facility, as well as field trips throughout the summer. To learn more about the 2021 Summer Camp, click here.

— Camp Invention hosted by Bethlehem Lutheran School is open to students K-6 as both an at home and in-person experience. The camp is a week long beginning Monday, June 14 in partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Campers will learn through hands-on activities including take-apart microphones, robotic crickets, duck-launching devices and more. To learn more please click here.

SPORTS

— Carson City Swim Lessons opened for registration on May 10 with four session dates throughout the summer beginning on June 14-24. This is a group swim instruction program for children ages 3 and above. Each session consists of eight, 30-minute lessons and all skill levels are welcome. Sessions will run from Monday - Thursday. — Jr. Victory Rollers, Carson City’s youth Roller Derby League, has an open enrollment all year long for children of all genders who want to learn the ins and outs of a rolling contact sport. Available to ages 10-17. To learn more about the Jr. Victory Rollers, click here.

— Shred Kids Mountain Bike Camp teaches everything needed to become a safe and well-rounded mountain biker, taught by certified coaches from the Carson High School Cycling Team. Open to youth ages 9-14, there are three camps dates available: Beginner camp from June 6 - June 11, Beginner camp from June 21-June 25, and Intermediate camp from July 19-July 23. — Archery Camp teaches participants the fundamentals of archery from the experienced instructors from Clear Creek Bowmen. Each day participants will be taught something new and work on improving their skills. Drinks will be provided but please bring your own snacks. Archery Camp will begin sometime in June and will run Mondays through Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Archery Range. To learn more about Archery Camp click here.

— Youth Basketball and Little Senators is temporarily postponed until further notice due to COVID-19. Check here for any changes.

— Junior Giants is a partnership between Carson City Parks and Recreation and the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada to offer a free, non-competitive coed baseball program for youth, sponsored by the San Fransisco Giants. Junior Giants will begin June 7 through Aug. 13 on Mondays and Fridays for ages 5-13. To learn more about the Junior Giants click here.

— Youth Futsal is currently postponed until further notice due to COVID-19. Please check here for any changes.

— Skate and Scooter Competitions are sponsored by the Wheelhouse and held at the Carson City Skate Park. This will be a freestyle competition where participants receive three 40 second runs to put together their best lines and biggest tricks. The skate park will be lighted for the later portions of the competition after dark. After each run, participants will be judged by experienced skating pros from the Wheelhouse, and the winner of each cate-gory will receive a prize! Categories are divided by beginner, intermediate, and advanced for skateboarding and scootering. The competition will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18. — American Youth Soccer Organization will host summer camps for ages 6 to 14 throughout the summer season, beginning July 5-9 with the second on Aug. 2-6, and the final on Aug. 9-13. To learn more about this program click here.

— Golden Lion Tai Chi C’Haun and Qi Gong will be hosted at the Community Center Comstock Room for all ages to teach Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese martial art form known worldwide for health, relaxation and longevity benefits. To learn more click here.

EDUCATIONAL

— The Carson City Library hosts many ongoing summer youth programs including coding courses, learning challenges, art night outs, and more. To view their full catalog of events through the summer, click here, or read below for a sample of their programming.

— The Summer Learning Challenge Kickoff will take place on Saturday, June 12 in the Library’s Garden outdoor space. This event is for all ages and will include a nature-themed kick off party. This year’s Summer Learning Challenge theme is “Tails and Tales.” Click here for further information.

— Project WILD: Animal Adaptions will be held at the Carson City Library on Wed., June 30 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. as a part of the Summer Learning Challenge for middle school students. Participants will learn how animas inherit traits and became so well adapted to living in Nevada. For more information click here.

— Virtual Hour of Code at the Carson City Library is for ages 10-14 held virtually via Zoom, and teaches middle school aged students the basics of computer programming with no prior experience needed. For more information click here.

FAMILY FRIENDLY SPECIAL EVENTS

— Movies in the Park is returning for the 2021 season, hosted by the Classic Cinema Club. Movies in the Park will begin at Dusk every Friday at Mills Park beginning June 18 through July 30. To learn more, click here.

FAITH-BASED
— The Salvation Army Day Camp will begin June 10 through Aug. 9, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. for Children ages 5-12. Daily filed trips include the Carson Pool, the Railroad Museum, Carson Lanes, and more. This is a bible based program with mature adult leadership. To learn more click here.
