Snow in Carson City? Weather service says yes
The snow may fly around Carson City tonight into Thursday if the current forecast holds up. The National Weather Service has issued both a Winter Weather Advisory and Wind Advisory for much of the region.
The Wind Advisory begins at 10 a.m. today. Forecaster say to expect winds 20 to 35 mph with gusts 50 to 60 mph. Gusts in wind prone areas such as Washoe Valley and Highway 395 near Cold Springs could briefly reach 70 to 80 mph, with Sierra ridge gusts of 100 to 120 mph.
The Winter Weather Advisory is from 7 Wednesday night to 4 a.m. Thursday for the Carson City area, including Dayton, Carson Valley and around Reno and Virginia City.
The weather service says to plan on slippery travel conditions toward the end of tonight's commute and overnight. Total snow accumulations of up to 2 inches in the lower elevations of Carson City, Reno and Sparks. One to 4 inches in the foothills around Reno, Virginia City and the Carson Valley.
As for the wind, the weather service advises to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans before winds increase that could blow these items away. Have flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles on hand in the event of a power outage.
