Carson City fundraiser to help rider's journey to raise horse adoption awareness
An independent and assisted living community in Carson City will host a fundraising event Tuesday to support a Nevada woman's effort to bring awareness and support to wild horse adoption.
The event, dubbed "Along for the Ride" will be done in support of Samantha Szesciorka, who, for the second time since 2013, will ride across Nevada by horseback to advocate for wild horses.
The event will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sierra Place Senior Living facility, 1111 West College Parkway in Carson City.
Szesciorka, a former Army journalist, moved to Nevada in 2008 and quickly fell in love with the Silver State and its wild horses. She was saddened to learn that many wild horses linger in holding facilities, waiting to be adopted.
To encourage more people to consider wild horse adoption, Szesciorka set out on the first “Nevada Discovery Ride” in 2013. She completed the 452-mile, solo horseback ride across the state with her adopted mustang, Sage, and dog, Bella, in 30 days.
Szesciorka, Sage and Bella will undertake a second Nevada Discovery Ride in August, covering more than 1,000 miles within Nevada to continue to promote her cause. The public can follow Szesciorka’s progress on NevadaDiscoveryRide.com where she will have a blog with daily notes from the trail and a mileage tracker.
Sierra Place and its parent company, Cascade Living Group, will donate the first $500 for Samantha’s ride. A cowboy hat will be passed around at the fundraiser for additional donations.
More than a fundraiser, “Along for the Ride” will be a celebration of Nevada culture, organizers say.
Szesciorka will be present with Sage and Bella to talk about this year’s ride and answer questions. Jim Woods, local bird expert, will display Nevada birds from the Galena Nature Center, and desert tortoises will be featured.
Rancher Lisa Luxembury will discuss the history of ranching in Nevada, as well as give roping demonstrations and bring a calf to feed from a bottle. Gold-panning demonstrations will take place, and Russell Murray, Washoe Valley custom saddle maker, will have one of his decorative saddles on display. Dennis Richardson, local bluegrass musician, will set the tone with “old-timey” tunes, and samples of “cowboy cuisine” will be served.
In addition, the Wild Horse Preservation League and the Hidden Valley Wild Horse Protection Fund will be present with information on horse adoption. The event is free and open to the public.
