Tuesday, April 21: Things to do in Carson City
The Stewart Indian School is the site of today’s ‘Easy Walk’ led by the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department. If you can’t join them this morning, make a point of exploring this treasure on your own. A podcast is available to guide you through the history of the site, complete with narratives from some who spent their youth there. Memorabilia from the school is on display at the Nevada State Museum and plans for a cultural center are in the works. Their cemetery is the final resting place of one of the area’s most famous Native American residents, basket-maker, Dot-so-la Lee. For more information on the Stewart Indian School go here.

In 1961, young Samuel Clemens joined his brother, Orion, in a cross country stagecoach ride that brought the pair to the new Nevada Territory. It didn’t take long for Samuel to make a name for himself here, and that name was Mark Twain. He immortalized our area in letters, articles, and his book ‘Roughing It.’ The Presbyterian Church on Division Street owes its roof to Twain’s fundraising efforts. The man, the humorist, the legend died this day in 1910; but his wit and wisdom and legacy will forever live on.
