Democrats respond to Heller vote; says he took nearly $76K from insurance companies
Tracking Sunday's congressional health care vote, Carson Now quoted Congressman Dean Heller with a statement from his Web site.
Here is that statement from Congressman Heller, a Republican who represents Nevada's second congressional district, which includes Carson City. His Web site is http://heller.house.gov/
"Today Congress did a great disservice to the American people. By choosing ideology over their constituency, Congress has empowered the federal government to take control of individual healthcare choices. Those who voted for this measure stood up for political buyoffs and special deals that benefit a small few while sticking the majority of Americans with higher taxes and higher healthcare costs. For our children and grandchildren, we will be passing on record debt and lower quality of life. At a time when Americans are asking for jobs, Congress has decided to deliver bigger government and less opportunity,” said Heller.

Here is a statement to Carson Now from Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokeswoman Jennifer Crider regarding Heller's vote:
"On Sunday, the House of Representatives took historic action by passing health insurance reform. But rather than vote to help middle class families, seniors, and small businesses finally afford coverage while reducing the deficit by more than a trillion dollars over 20 years, Representative Dean Heller sided with the big health insurance companies instead.
"For decades, big health insurance companies have profited off discrimination and denials and pricing middle class families out of the care they need but that didn’t stop Representative Dean Heller from continuing to side with insurance companies. Heller refused to give folks back home access to the same health care that he gets as a Member of Congress," said Crider.
“After taking $75,937 in contributions from insurance companies, it’s outrageous that Heller would put insurance company profits before helping middle class families and small businesses afford coverage, closing the Medicare prescription drug donut hole, and reducing the deficit by more than a trillion dollars over the next two decades,” said Crider.
"The committee provided these bullet points regarding Heller's vote:
— Health Insurance Reform legislation passed the House of Representatives on Sunday, March 21, 2010 [H.R. 3590, #165, 3/21/10] [H.R. 4872, #167, 3/21/10]
— For Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District, Heller’s vote against health insurance reform was a vote against:
— Improving coverage for 481,000 residents.
— Providing tax credits and assistance for 183,000 families and 19,500 small businesses to purchase affordable coverage.
— Improving Medicare for 123,000 seniors, including closing the prescription drug donut hole.
— Guaranteeing that 21,300 residents with pre-existing medical conditions can obtain coverage.
— Protecting 1,700 families from bankruptcy due to unaffordable health care costs.
— Allowing 64,000 young adults to stay on their parents’ insurance plans.
— Reducing the cost of uncompensated care for hospitals and other health care providers by $65 Million annually.
