Don Q's fishing report for week of March 20-26

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of March 20-26.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Weather will fluctuate from low 50’s to mid-60’s.
Still dry road conditions and low congestion on the water.
Expect fair to good fishing this week. Almanor is 99% ice free, for now. Lake levels remain low, watch for hazards, floating logs, chunks of wood, sticks etc. Winter isn’t over yet. Always check the weather reports and road conditions before making the trip up there.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Brian Roccucci of Big Daddy's Guide Service (530-283-4103) (bryan@bigdaddyfishing.com) reports:
The spring Brown bite is ON!! If you have been waiting to book a trip and get in on some of this stellar spring Brown action, now is the time.
The warm day time temperatures have Lake Almanor moving rapidly into spring mode, and the Browns have answered the call.
These beautiful fish are on the move, actively seeking out their favorite meal this time of year, Pond Smelt.
My clients and I have been enjoying a steady pick of quality hard tugging Browns from 3 to 7.5 pounds in recent trips as well as a few smaller over ambitious fish , along with just a few Bows in the 3 to 4 pound class.
This is what spring fishing is supposed to be like, a "down and dirty" rod in your hands battle.
The look on someone's face when the first Brown of the morning lights them up is priceless, and falls somewhere between terror and elation.
Very rarely do I get the opportunity to actually catch a fish while out on the lake, that's the clients job, but this week, even I got the chance to get in on the action, fighting a gorgeous 27 inch 7+ pound brown to the boat.
Our weapons of choice have been Rapalas in a variety of colors loaded with Pro-Cure's Trophy Trout Gel fished from the surface down to 10 feet.
The weather has been un-beatable with cool mornings giving way to warm, t-shirt weather in the afternoons and almost no wind.
To make the days even more enjoyable, the boat traffic has been very light.
Judging by a handful of trailers in the parking lot, I know there are a few out there but we haven't been seeing them, the radio has been dead quiet as well.
With multiple Browns in the 5,6,7, 8, and 10 pound classes already boated so far this year, don't miss the chance to land your trophy, spring 2013 is shaping up to be one heck of a ride.
I look forward to seeing you on the water.

ANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The road has been closed for the season, so there will be no more fishing reports for Angel Lake until it opens next spring.

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Closed until the last Saturday in April 2013.

BLUE LAKES, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NEV:

BLUE LAKES, CALIF:
The road is closed.

BOCA RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Boca is wide open now and the fishing has been good!
Best action by shore fisherman has been the dam and at the deeper troughs outside the inlet.
Lake is at its winter level so boaters are launching from the east side of the lake. Those who are able to launch should concentrate their efforts about 50-70 off the dam with kokanee (yes, kokanee) imitations as this is what the large browns are feeding on.
Also, concentrate off points as large fish will be suspended here.
Shore fisherman can be successful by throwing all sorts of bait and lures such as large spinners and small stick baits that will imitate kokanee, rainbows, or baitfish.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Closed until the last Saturday in April 2013.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:
John Voss of the Caples Lake Resort (209-258-8888) (www.capleslakeresort.com): reports:
Bear River Reservoir, 24 miles down Highway 88, at 6,000 feet was thawed today 3/13. Caples Lake usually thaws about 6 weeks after Bear.
Looks like an early May thaw is likely for Caples Lake which is usually the case in a dry precipitation year.
John Voss, Caples Lake Resort – 3/13

CARSON RIVER, WEST, CALIF:
Closed until the last Saturday in April 2013.

CARSON RIVER, EAST, CALIF:

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Flows are dropping and clearing.
Steelhead fishing is winding down, but anglers are still reporting catching a few fresh fish mixed with spawned out steelhead.
Bank access on the Chetco River is really good, with some of the most popular spots being Social Security, Loeb State Park and Ice Box.

CONVICT LAKE AND CONVICT CREEK. CALIF:
Closed until the last Saturday in April 2013.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Closed until the last Saturday in April 2013.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
A report that it was still frozen as of last Friday afternoon.
The thickness of the ice is unknown, but there were several ice fishermen, close to the shoreline by the dam.

DONNER LAKE, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
With moderate high temps in the 50's and this lakes close proximity to town it's the perfect cure if you need to get out and wet a line.
The west end of the lake by the boat launch or off the beach has been great for some planters using nightcrawlers, eggs, or power bait and small lures.
Patience is needed but when the big schools of rainbows come thru the action can be awesome.
Some that are flyfishing using jig head flies have been doing well!
If your fishing for Macks throw countdown rapalas or large spoons.
Boats can be launched here and the Mack fishing has been pretty good! Trolling and jigging has been successful at depths from 55-75 feet with most Macks ranging in the teens. Some smaller Macks are at depths above this and can be caught even by the shore fishermen along the deeper drop-offs.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The reservoir is ice free and following the most recent storm front the water is a little murky. Anglers have been doing well for rainbows and small brown trout using Mepp’s Spinners, night crawlers, and Power Bait.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The reservoir is ice free and full of water, but few anglers have been fishing during the past week.
Largemouth bass and crappie spawning should be starting up shortly.

FALL RIVER, CALIF:
Closed until the last Saturday in April 2013.

FEATHER RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The Striper bite has slowed as of late, but there are a few out there. Also, the Steelhead have been found on the upper parts of the river. Suggest fishing with night crawlers, small plugs, spinners and smelt patterns.
Courtesy of Johnson's Bait & Tackle.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
Frenchman Lake is free of ice everywhere except the dam.
We are not recommending ice fishing any longer as the ice is unsafe.
The roads around the lake are pretty much open, except for snow ruts and mud, so use caution.
You can park at the dam and hike around the point toward the boat ramp or hike to the left of the dam toward the cove.
Fishing should be great. Use nightcrawlers.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:
Closed until the last Saturday in April 2013.

KLAMATH RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Good surprise, water conditions have remained perfect for us anglers. Typically fishing quality tends to fall off a bit about now.
However, we are catching steelhead! It appears that the fish are migrating slower than their fins usually carry them.
Predictions are that good fishing may last into April.
Flies if the week: Shafer's 3-D, Pat's Rubber Legs, #12-14 Prince Nymphs, Shrimp Pink Micro Spawns and a select Boles Bazookas.
And don’t forget your Red Copper Johns!

LEWISTON LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing has been consistently good thanks to our warm weather. Midge hatches can make it tough to catch the rainbows, but If you’re willing to wait till Noon the word is that Rainbows start biting on #16 Pheasant Tails, #18 Frostbites and anything in a #16, dark to gray in color.

LUNDY LAKE, CALIF:

LAKE MEAD, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing has been light following the recent storm activity.
The Government Wash has produced striped bass for anglers trolling in 30 to 40 feet of water. To entice the bite of the largemouth and smallmouth bass, try using crank baits and swimbaits fished on the bottom near nests.
Reminder to boaters:
In an effort to hinder the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS), as of Jan. 1 all motorized and non-motorized vessels able to retain water are now required to obtain and display an AIS decal. Details can be obtained from an NDOW office or through the agency’s website, www.ndow.org.

LAKE MOHAVE, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Striper fishing has improved in the Willow Beach area. AC Plugs have been taking fish near mile marker 50, some as large as 18 pounds. At Cottonwood Cove anglers have found success for striped bass as large as seven pounds.

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
The recreational Dungeness crabbing is open in the ocean.
The ocean has been rough the past week, making it difficult to get across the bar to fish.
Fishing for bottom fish including rockfish, and ling cod is open at all depths until April 1. The marine fish daily bag limit is seven fish and a separate daily limit for lingcod (two).
Retention of cabezon is not allowed until July 1 due to a small harvest cap. Fishing for big ling cod has been good for anglers when the ocean has been calm. At this time of the year big ling cod move into shallower water in preparation to spawn.
Anglers have caught surfperch on the local beaches when the ocean swells have been down. The swells have been too big most of the week making it difficult for anglers to fish for surfperch along the beaches. When the swells drop below four feet anglers should be able to start picking up surf perch along their favorite beaches. Fishing with sand shrimp or sand worms are always great baits to use for surf perch fishing.

ORVILLE LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Bass are staying at roughly 35 ft., it is recommended to go slow. Finesse drop-shot, tubes, and dart-head jigs have been working so far.

Upper Owens River:
Current flow is 58 CFS. Warming temps should pick up the bite here.
Not much on the surface so dig deep with flash back hares ears, prince nymphs and bead head caddis pupa.
Lower Owens River:
Water flow is steady at 201 CFS. Fishing continues to improve.
Nice caddis grab. e/c caddis cdc caddis x-caddis. Red jujube midge, small Stevie's Wonders in black or grey and olive or grey WD-40's.

PIT RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
As the river conditions continue to improve we have all good fishing reports coming in!. Nymphing with #14 Pheasant Tail Nymphs, Zack's Thurmanator Stones and Mercer's Poxy-Back Stones seems to be driving the fish wild. Not very crowded at all!
Do yourself a favor; take a drive to the river sometime this week!

and Ted Fay Fly Shop.

PROSSER RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Lake is ice free and one should concentrate their efforts in the inlets and by the dam. Small spoons, spinners, and flies such as woolly buggers are taking rainbows along with an assortment of baits.

PYRAMID LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
A report that on Thursday morning, there was still a lot of slimy gunk in the water at Monument Rocks, making it difficult to cast and retrieve.
Also on Thursday, lots of fishermen (shore, chest waders, float tubes, canoes and boats) were at Warrior Point, but there was very little catching.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Up & down go the numbers as the river bounced from 3,500 to 5,000 CFS however as tough as that made fishing on the 8th this week looks like smooth sailing. Conditions now are great and we hear that the fishing is going to improve and stay steady through the week.

Barry Miller, a Department of Fish and Wildlife environmental scientist added, “ Good Season expected this year ( 2013). The higher salmon estimates are based on an annual September survey of fall-run Chinook that are expected to return to the Sacramento River to spawn this year”.

SMITH RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
With the boat launch plowed anyone can launch a boat here now. Lots of activity around the island with some large macks and browns being caught.
Other areas one can look to are the transition zones between ice and water as baitfish will hide under the shelves of ice and like Boca the points between coves may hold some large suspended fish.
For the shore fisherman spoons, large Spinners, and stick baits will work and of course if you're throwing bait nothing beats an inflated nightcrawler drenched in your favorite scent.
Action here has been better for the boater than the shore fisherman.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Rick and Tresa Kennedy of Tight Line Guide Service (888-975-0990) (www.fish tightlines.com) report:
Today, we made our first trip to Stampede, the news traveled fast that it was open. The road was clear with only a couple patches of snow. The ramp was in good shape other than a little ice but nothing a 4x4 couldn’t handle.
We launched about 6:30 AM and headed straight across from the ramp and started fishing the same area we hooked all the nice Mack’s last year.
We made a couple quick passes before quickly switching over to Rapalas and targeting browns. We gave this a couple hours without any hits.
The lake was like glass. We switched back to Pro Troll Sting Fish and worked our way back into 60’ of water. At 10:00 with still no fish in the box I was getting concerned that it was going to be one of those days.
About then, we got a little breeze and a ripple on the water and that’s all it took. Before we knew it we had 5 Mack’s in the box. The biggest was 10lb.The other weighed in at 9.5 lb, 9 lb, 5 lb and one that went about 2 to 3 pounds. All these fish were caught on a size 15 Pro Troll Sting Fish fishing the bottom in 60’ of water.
Three of these fish were stuffed with 6” Kokanee.
The water temp started out around 37 however we found 42-degree water in the shallows behind the island.

LAKE TAHOE:
Rick and Tresa Kennedy of Tight Line Guide Service (888-975-0990) (www.fish tightlines.com) report:
We launched at Lake Forest a little after 6:00 AM and headed straight over to Sand Harbor. Our plan was to fish for brown’s for a couple hours before moving out to deeper water for Mack’s.
We pulled a variety of Rapala’s along with some Indilure Spoons.
We were also trying out some new Abu Garcia 5500 LC reels with 30-pound Spiderwire Stealth Braid with 12-pound Trilene 100 percent Fluorocarbon.
We worked the east shore hard until about 11:00 AM with only one fish, a Mack going about 3 lbs.
We decided to switch gears and move out to deeper water off Cal Neva Point where we picked up our limits of Mack’s. The size was nothing special today with our biggest fish going about 4 pounds.
We got our Mack’s down 200 to 280 feet on spoons.

TOPAZ LAKE:
A report that on Sunday morning, the weather was gorgeous, and there were a number of fishermen on the north shore with a boats trolling in front of them, but very few fish were being caught by anyone.

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing here is a dwindling option. The reports are all good, but the window is closing if not by next week, by the end of March for sure. Go and enjoy steelhead fishing in the sunny, warm weather while you can!
Go this week while the supply of steelhead lasts.

Flies working best are Stone flies, Copper John's, and Egg patterns.

WILLOW BEACH, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers are finding good action for large stripers. The fish are biting A.C. Plugs and other trout-imitating swimbaits. Three fish weighing in at 16.16 pounds, 17 pounds and 27.76 pounds came in during the past week. Rainbow trout continue to hit small spinners and other traditional trout baits following the weekly plants on Fridays.
