Fleet Reserve Association names local scholarship winners at Saturday luncheon
Nine youth scholarship winners were named Saturday at the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), Sierra Tahoe Branch 137, annual Scholarship Luncheon held inside Veterans Hall in downtown Carson City.
The yearly luncheon is held in honor of the scholarship recipients, their families and friends.
"The Fleet Reserve Association, Sierra Tahoe Branch 137, annually recognizes our youth by awarding scholarships to students of local high schools who have entered an essay contest describing their patriotism," said Ladies Auxiliary Fleet Reserve Association Sierra Tahoe 137 Secretary Joyce Jackson. "These kids are our future and we want to do everything we can to support and encourage them to be productive citizens of our community."
Twenty-eight contestants from schools in South Lake Tahoe, Minden-Gardnerville, and Carson City competed for scholarships provided by the local Fleet Reserve Association by submitting an essay entitled "What Does Memorial Day Mean To Me."
Finalists in four different age groups received cash prizes for first, second and third place ranging from $50 to $100, Jackson said.
Local scholarship winners were selected in four categories from grades 7-12.
First and second prizes in 12th grade went to Erik Gonzalez and Courtney Morose, respectively, both from Yerington High School. Third place was awarded to Rebecca Miller of South Tahoe High School.
Ninth grade finalists featured first prize winner Leah Schemenauer of Douglas High School and second place finalist Alexus Bodenstein from Yerington High School.
Faith Christian Academy boast first, second and third place in the eighth grade category, including first prize to Annalynn Mueller, second prize to Andrew Kalb, and third prize to Addie Mae Berger.
Lucas Esquivel from Faith Christian Academy was awarded first prize in the seventh grade category, while Carson Valley Middle School students Alana Crockett and Matthew Gaskell claimed second and third prizes, respectively.
First place essays will be entered into the National FRA Essay Committee, where the top three finalists will receive cash awards of between $1,000 to $3,000 respectively.
Dozens attended Saturday's luncheon and scholarship certificate ceremony. Jackson said they were expecting about 60 people at the event.
