Silver Terrace Cemeteries Director To Speak On History of the Comstock Cemeteries
There is loads of history for free, or donations, if you are so inspired, at the Silver Terrace Cemeteries in Virginia City. However, Candace Wheeler, director of the Comstock Cemetery Foundation, has been a one-woman bastion against vandalism and defamation of the historic cemeteries of Virginia City, Gold Hill, and Silver City.
She has been the curator of all the Comstock cemeteries, and she knows where the bodies are buried. Well, most of them, anyway.
Dealing with old graves involves history, archaeology, and communication skills. Many people have returned tombstones stolen in the past, but she has to match them up with the correct graves.
Wheeler has been an invaluable asset in that regard, with all things that matter to historians, or folks who just want to know the truth.
On Thursday, March 3, 2016, Wheeler will present a special program on the “Secrets of the Silver Terrace Cemeteries”, talking about the residents who ended up in the historic cemeteries. The presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Room of the historic hotel.
The Gold Hill Hotel, the oldest hotel in Nevada, and its renowned Crown Point Restaurant, are located at 1540 Main Street, Gold Hill, just one mile south of Virginia City on SR 342.
Dinner is from 4-8 p.m. at the Crown Point Restaurant at the Gold Hill Hotel with several fine-dining menu options offered. Dinner and lecture is $25 and $10 for the lecture only.
For reservations, call the Gold Hill Hotel at 775-847-0111.
Other upcoming presentations include:
— March 10 – Debbi Bender of Bats in the Belfry Ghost Tours – “Spirits of the Comstock.”
— March 17 – Corrado De Gasperis, Comstock Mining Inc. CEO – First half “World Economy and Gold” and second half “Comstock Geology.”
