Senator Square: Seventh annual 5K Run/Walk this Saturday at CHS
It is time for a great workout at Carson High School to both support its students and potentially win a race, not to mention avoid a heart attack.
The seventh annual Safe and Sober 2017 5K Run/Walk at the CHS track facility, presented by Carson High Safe Grad Booster, is set for Feb. 11.
The Safe Grad Committee started its annual Safe Grad tradition in 1988, providing graduating seniors a safe and sober all-night celebration on the eve of their graduation, followed by a trip to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Northern California.
This event has been a tremendous success in that not one graduation night fatality for a CHS graduate has occurred since its inception.
Registration and raffle tickets may be purchased by going to race360.com/16632. Late registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the race begins promptly at 10:00 a.m.
Prizes include two bike tune-ups from Bike Habitat, $250 gift certificate to Boomtown Steakhouse, a gift basket from Dutch Bros., a one-hour massage from Kona's Island Massage, four pairs of LuLaRoe Leggings, two $50 Gift Certificates to Q's BBQ, a one-night stay at Mont Bleu Resort in South Lake Tahoe, four infield tickets to an Aces Game, a $100 Gift Certificate to Reno Gift Box, two Gift Baskets from Tupperware, a Gift Basket from Trader Joe’s, five $5 Gift Cards to Yogurt Beach, and Wild Island Adventure Park tickets.
For more information about the event, call Race Coordinator Kyra Hinton at 434-760- 0635, or email her at race.safegrad@gmail.com. Those interested may also visit carsonhighsafegrad.com.
Rock the Beat
February is American Heart Month sponsored by the American Heart Association to raise awareness and support.
Fun Fact: The heart is one giant pump, and every minute, it pumps about five quarts of blood through a system of blood vessels over 60,000 miles long.
Everyone is being asked to wear red on Mondays in February. Teacher Erin Bean has asked students to perform advocacy for heart health this month.
Need some red? Erin Bean has "Rock the Beat" t-shirts available for $5; however, any red will work. Email her at ebean@carson.k12.nv.us.
Speech and debate
CHS Speech and Debate competed at Galena High School last weekend. The team’s duo interpretation pieces performed very well with all three advancing to final round.
In Novice duo interpretation, Rebecca Trejo and Valarie Torres took fourth place with their piece on how to survive a zombie apocalypse. Teammates Katherine Vallejos and Emerald Theriault took second with their cutting of Shrek.
In senior duo, Jocelyn Manzano and Adam Lackey took sixth with the 10 Worst Breakups of all time. Evan Cherpeski took second in novice domestic extemporaneous speaking and moves up to senior level speech.
In debate, Rebecca Trejo also placed eighth in novice Public Forum speaking points. Debate captain Shaylin Segura placed eighth in senior Lincoln Douglas speaking points, and Sophie Peterson placed third in novice Lincoln Douglas debate.
CHS debaters also competed in the annual Lions Club speaking contest on the topic of diabetes. Jesse Session placed third, Katie Ambriz placed second, and Jessica Preston took first place, and all three moved on to the zone contest level.
The team hosts the league tournament Feb. 24-25.
One hundred community volunteers are needed to judge this important and entertaining event. Anyone interested can contact Coach Patrick Mobley at pmobley@carson.k12.nv.us for more information.

CHS No. 1 foam fingers
The Greater Nevada Credit Union branch at CHS is selling the CHS #1 Foam Fingers for only $2 each. One hundred percent of the sales go to support the Blue Thunder Marching Band.
Please support CHS’ Senator Pride and help out the band, too. Quantities are limited, so stop by soon.
Student of the Week
Dominic Goodner is a hardworking student involved in the club Get Involved. He has helped take this club to the next level, and he is an outstanding individual who is a natural born leader.
He is a senior this year and has managed to provide so much to CHS in a short period of time.
Dominic is very involved in the Interact Club, SkillsUSA, and One Up. He has a bright future ahead. The CHS student body is grateful for all Dominic Goodner is doing to make this high school stand out in a positive way.
Senior Spotlight
This week’s senior spotlight shines on Allan Huntington. Allan is an excellent student, with a 4.56 GPA. He maintains high grades in his current courses which include four AP courses and an honors course. Allan has really enjoyed taking physics, IT, and engineering.
In addition to being a strong student, Allan is involved with CHS and the Carson City community. Allan has been a member of the CHS marching band, Blue Thunder, throughout his four years at CHS.
He has also been a member of the Robotics team for the past few years, winning the regional competition twice and also winning the Rockwell Collins Engineering Award for the team's engineering notebook design. Allan spends time with his robotics team working with younger students, mostly fourth and fifth grade robotics teams in Reno.
Allan is also an avid cycler and a member of the Alta Alpina Cycling Club; he participates in weekly races.
Allan has not made a final decision about which college he will attend, but he has been accepted into both the Colorado School of Mines and Colorado State University. He likes the idea of experiencing life in Colorado.
Allan plans to major in either electrical or mechanical engineering, putting to good use the skills he has learned in the CHS high school programs.
Congratulations to Allan and good luck.
Phil Brady is an English teacher at CHS.
