Carson City Commute for Jan. 19: Snowfall in valley locations
Precipitation received late Wednesday overnight into Thursday, with snowfall being recorded in some valley locations, has resulted in road controls for the Thursday morning commute.
Snow began to fall before 7 a.m. Thursday in Carson City, resulting in light accumulation on streets. Motorists in and around the Nevada state capital are advised to drive with caution on the Thursday morning commute over snow-covered roads that may be slippery.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) currently posts chain or snow tire requirements on Interstate 580 for 15 miles through the Washoe Valley between Carson City and Reno, as well as a seven-mile stretch of Old U.S. Highway 395 Alternate on the valley's west side.
Chain or snow tires are required near Spooner Summit in Carson City and Douglas County, including a seven-mile stretch in Carson City and 14 miles in Douglas County along the shore of Lake Tahoe.
U.S. Highway 395 South in Southern Douglas County requires chains or snow tires on a 16-mile stretch south of Gardnerville near Topaz Lake and the State Route 208 interchange, which also is posting controls at this hour from the Douglas County line to 12.5 miles into Lyon County.
Traction tires or devices are required on a 12-mile stretch of SR 207 (Kingsbury Grade) in Douglas County.
SR 341 toward Virginia City, from the Lyon County line to 11 miles into Storey County, as well as a three-mile stretch of SR 342 (Six Mile Canyon Road), from the Lyon County line into Storey County, require chains or snow tires.
SR 431 up the Mount Rose Highway to Incline Village requires traction tires or devices on a 22-mile stretch in Washoe County.
o Washoe County along the shore of Lake Tahoe requires chains or snow tires at this hour.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports that precipitation should thin out after 11 a.m. Thursday morning, providing a brief break in mountain snowfall and rain at lower elevations in the valleys.
However, a chance of rain and/or shower remains at about 60 percent Thursday, the NWS said.
More precipitation is expected overnight into early Friday morning, the NWS reports, with snow levels dropping to about 4,000 feet. Accumulations of 1-4 inches in Carson City and surrounding valleys is possible with a Winter Weather Advisory lasting until about 11 a.m. Friday.
Rain and snow mix is forecast Friday afternoon into the evening until 11 p.m. with an 80 percent chance of precipitation, the NWS said.
The overnight low temperature Thursday night into Friday morning is forecast to be around 27 degrees and a daytime high Friday of about 37.
Snow should taper off Saturday with only a 20 percent chance of precipitation, the NWS reports, but winter weather returns again overnight into Sunday with another 1-3 inches possible. Snow is expected to stick Sunday, accumulating between 3-5 inches during the day and continuing into Monday morning to start next week's commute.
