Privately funded benches, bike racks to add character to downtown Carson City
Carson City residents will be able to buy a piece of history while supporting the downtown redevelopment to begin this March.
Metal benches and bicycle racks to be placed strategically along Carson and Curry Streets are available for purchase by businesses, those who wish to remember or honor a loved one or family, or simply to put a family name on the bench. The cost is $1400 per four-foot bench and includes a 10-inch X 5-inch bronze plaque allowing up to four lines of text. The bicycle racks are $500 each and will feature a plaque.
The Carson City Chamber is coordinating the sale of the 24 benches and Muscle Power is handling the purchase of 12 bicycle racks. Both agencies are acting as agents only and the full amount collected will be submitted to a special fund set up to purchase the benches and racks.
Though technically owned and maintained by the City of Carson City, the benches will be a symbol of pride and support for those who purchase them and the personal plaque will be displayed for the life of the bench or rack. Placement is not guaranteed and will be sold on a first-come; first-serve basis.
When placed, each bench or bicycle rack will enjoy a formal “ribbon cutting” that can be attended by friends, relatives, business associates and those interested in creating a friendlier downtown.
The proposed benches and bicycle racks will add character to our downtown and provide a resting place for our visitors. The program is based on the successful MainStreet Gardnerville project where privately-purchased benches were placed throughout their community, thus freeing up monies for other needs.
The closing date to purchase the benches or bicycle racks is January 29th and all monies — check or cash — must be submitted by then to be able to place the order.
More information may be obtained by calling the Chamber at 882-1565 or Jeff Potter representing Muscle Power at 315-2619.
Be a part of history and be #CarsonProud.
