Christmas tree recycling pick up around Carson City begins Monday
Go ahead and keep the Christmas tree up through the weekend but by Sunday night you may want remove the ornaments and take it down as curbside recycling in Carson City begins Monday.
Christmas tree recycling in the capital city in cooperation with Capital Sanitation and Waste Management Inc., is a tradition that turns thousands of holiday trees into wood chips and mulch that are returned to the soil. Trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day beginning Monday, Jan. 4 or taken to a drop-off locations.
The program continues to be a huge success. Last year the program was able to redirect 31 tons of wood waste from the Carson City landfill. The dates for tree collection are:
Curbside collection will begin Monday and run through Jan. 8 on your regular trash day. If trees are longer than three feet, please cut them up into sections no longer than 3 feet.
Drop boxes will be at the following locations beginning Monday through Jan. 8, 2016:
— JC Penney parking lot
— Carson City corporate yard on Butti Way, just west of Carson City Public Works on Airport Road.
— Carson City Landfill (green waste pile.)
After Jan. 8 please take your Christmas tree to the Carson City landfill for recycling.
Trees left curbside after Jan. 8 will be disposed of as garbage and will need to be cut into three foot sections so they will fit into Waste Management trucks.
Please note: Remove all decorations, lights, tinsel and bases from the trees before recycling. Call Carson City Environmental Control Authority at 887-2355, extension 7390, 7380 or 7376 for more information.
Elsewhere in Northern Nevada: Since 2001 more than 300,000 trees have been recycled throughout Nevada thanks to the help of Christmas Tree Recycling programs, thousands of volunteers along with community sponsors.
These programs were established to provide our communities with an easy alternative to landfilling and to prevent illegal dumping of Christmas trees in public open spaces. When chipped into mulch, cut trees become valuable organic material used in landscaping projects that help conserve soil moisture, keep plants healthy and control weeds.
