Students at Online Charter School Give Back Through Service Projects
The mission of Leadership Academy of Nevada (LANV) is to prepare students to become principled leaders. Each semester students study and learn leadership skills and at the end of the year put the learned skills into practice through a three-week Leadership Block. An essential characteristic of a principled leader is providing service and all students are required to give at least two hours of service to their community.
Because LANV students are spread throughout Nevada, they have the option of performing an individual service project, combining in small groups with other students who live near them, or participating in a service project in Las Vegas that is planned by Student Ambassadors, parent volunteers, and school administrators. Valerie Blake, LANV Governing Board Chair said, "The ultimate goal of leadership education is to have a positive impact on society. By requiring service, our students are learning to step out of their comfort zones, recognize the needs of others, and work to improve their communities."
What Were the Service Projects in 2015?
Mentors, administrators, and members of the Governing Board were pleased and surprised with the variety and quality of the service rendered by LANV students throughout the state. Here’s a small sample of some of the service projects:
Four middle-school students in Pahrump helped clean up a dog park at the Symphony Animal Foundation.
Three high-school students in Las Vegas modeled dresses and helped event organizers at a Chinese-American Mother’s Day event.
A large group of both middle and high school students picked up debris around campsites, raked and cleaned up sand volleyball courts, removed weeds, and made general improvements at the Veyo Pool/Crawdad Canyon Rock Climbing Park.
Several students in the Elko area built and placed birdhouses and removed gopher holes in a public park.
Several students in the Fernley area helped unload and shelve food at the local food bank.
Thirty students, administrators, and parents pulled plants and created trails at the Clark County Wetlands Park. Dana Surwill, a LANV student said, "Volunteering at the Clark County Wetlands Park was fun and educational. I feel like LANV made a difference in just a few hours and a little hard work. We learned about indigenous and invasive plants and species. We helped to clear a new trail for people who don’t want to take long hikes but still want to enjoy the park. It was also great to work side-by-side with other LANV students and staff. We might be a small school but we can change the world!"
