With the spring equinox right around the corner on March 20 and fair weather persisting around the Carson City area, hiking and biking trails are a popular way to get some fresh air after a year of COVID-19-related isolation.

On Monday, Feb. 22, the Carson City Library reopened full time to provide the public with its print and electronic resources during regular operating hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

When forced to shut its doors last year during the statewide shut down to flatten the COVID-19 curve, the library adapted to the many challenges sent its way in order to continue providing resources to the community, and to keep people connected.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City, showcases women’s history in March by featuring work by the Wild Women Artists group through the museum’s online “The First Lady Presents…” program. The museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 also will be minting a special medallion honoring the Transcontinental Railroad from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 13; and displaying historical women’s clothing during the Curator’s Corner program from 1 to 3 p.m., March 17.

In 2020, 314 vehicle crash fatalities were reported in Nevada, speeding and impairment were the leading cause of these fatalities. As of this press release, 48 fatalities have been reported in Nevada for 2021.

That number, sadly, continues to rise.

Carson City School District is pleased to announce Carson High School Seniors Jaden Anderson, 17, and Damien King, 18, have both earned contracts with the Three Ravens Publishing Company for their graphic design work in creating winning designs for a new epic fantasy novel, “The Raven and the Crow: Dark Storm Rising,” written by Michael K. Falciani, the pen name of Mr. Kinkade DeJoseph, a teacher at Bordewich Bray Elementary School.

Overnight snow showers left anywhere from a light coating to a couple inches of snow around the Carson City area in time for the Thursday morning commute.

Carson City Public Works was scheduled to do water fire flow testing on Wednesday, March 10. Public Works advises to expect temporary periods of discolored water in the areas surrounding the intersections of Ormsby Boulevard and West Washington Street; West Long Street and Andorra Drive; and West Sunset Way and West Washington Street.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a stolen 1995 Caterpillar 416D tractor and backhoe.

In the Quad Counties that make up Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties, 18,400 individuals have thus far completed their COVID-19 vaccinations, having received both first and second doses, which is equivalent to 10.9 percent of the overall population, statistics show.

Also noteworthy, 32,147 Quad County residents have begun the process of receiving their first dose, which is 19.06 percent of the overall population. This surpasses the statewide averages of 8.96 percent having completed the vaccination process.

As sports teams and schools nationwide grapple with whether their longtime mascots are offensive, Nevada lawmakers are considering a bill that would ban racially discriminatory language or imagery in a school's “identifiers” such as its name, logo or mascot.

The Carson City School District School Board of Trustees voted unanimously to offer in-person, on-campus instruction to all seventh and eighth graders, four days a week, Tuesdays through Fridays.

In an effort to rehabilitate the heavily used lawn areas at Sonoma Park, Carson City staff will be reseeding thin areas and applying soil amendment; the park will be closed March 22 through April 13, 2021 to allow the new grass seed to properly germinate and thrive.

CARSON CITY — Nevada has been selected as the inaugural cohort of states in the Workforce Innovation Network, the National Governors Association (NGA) and Cognizant U.S. Foundation announced today. The state will receive a grant to improve employment outcomes in response to the economic impacts of COVID-19, connecting job seekers to training, education, job opportunities and essential support services.
