Come join us for a few hours of fun with Realtor Volunteer Days Open House at Spirit of Hope! We will be serving tea and delicious desserts and finger sandwiches while we receive donations of sheets, towels, pillows and anything else you think we would need to supply our beautiful houses for our wonderful people in need!

The Nevada State Elks Association provided 27 scholastic awards to students, throughout our state, toward their college expenses. Other cash awards were given to six Legacy Award winners, two Vocational Award winners and five Nursing Scholarship Award winners. Carson City Elks lodge had 3 scholastic recipients at the NSEA level.

My friend Cat asked me to identify what was eating the bottoms, and only the bottoms, of her cherry tomatoes. While it could be birds, earwigs, slugs or cutworms, we both decided it was grasshoppers, which she had seen eating her raspberries. If raspberries, why not tomatoes?

The Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), Tom Burns, will be the featured speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City Meeting. Burns will discuss the state’s current economic condition as well as potential opportunities for growth over the next several years. The meeting takes place Tuesday, September 5th at noon in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom. The public is invited to attend.

As the Nevada State Museum prepares to celebrate another year sharing Nevada’s unique history, the Friends of the Museum are again offering an opportunity for new and experienced volunteers and tour guides to learn more about our region, history, and the State Museum.

This week, the senior in the spotlight is Anna Turner. Anna is a bright, dedicated, hardworking young woman. Ranked third in her class, with a 5.1 weighted GPA, Anna has never received lower than an A throughout her high school career, while taking an extremely challenging load.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisor’s meeting will take place Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Robert ‘Bob’ Crowell Board Room in the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

A 30-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of felony domestic battery with strangulation, preventing a victim from reporting a crime, and being a prohibited person with a firearm, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

The educated and articulate Grosh brothers were faced with Shakespearean misfortune almost from the day they left Pennsylvania bound for the California Gold Fields. They also designed an unsuccessful water pressure powered perpetual motion machine and an improved but unsuccessful gold recovery device. They were so close to achieving their goals, including a big strike, but it was almost as if a deliberate and cruel hand of fate was intentionally working against them.

"Sierra Highway: U.S. 395 and El Camino Sierra in California and Nevada" is the fourth volume in his growing "Highways of the West" series, joining "America's Loneliest Road" (U.S. 50, which also touches on Carson City history), "Victory Road," and "The Lincoln Highway in California."

Just after 10 a.m., a crash was reported at the intersection of Highway 50 and Airport Road.

Injuries have been reported.

In a collaborative effort to ensure the safety of all road users as they travel this Labor Day weekend, the California Highway Patrol, Nevada State Police, and Arizona Department of Public Safety are joining forces for a Maximum Enforcement Period. The tri-state enforcement initiative begins at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, and continues through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 4.

Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer Amy Burgans was recently designated as a Certified Elections/Registration Administrator (CERA), the highest professional achievement for election officials in the country.

Kaboom-Con! Northern Nevada will be hosted on September 7th, 2024, at the Carson City Community Center in Carson City, NV. The event will have almost ten thousand square feet of exhibitor floor space.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit is proud to officially announce Deputy Ryan Greb and K9 Proton as our newest K9 team.

Deputy Greb has been with the Sheriff’s office for more than seven years, he is a SWAT team lead, and he’s a field training officer in the Patrol Division. His new partner, K9 Proton, is an 18-month old Belgian Malinois who’s fluent in Dutch. Proton specializes in drug detection, tracking, and apprehension.

Changes are afoot at the Nevada Day Parade this year, held on Saturday, Oct. 28, with one major change being highlighted: this year, the parade with be campaign-free.

“Due to the division in our political system, the last few years have brought threats that have kept officials away from the parade,” Executive Director Brooke Santina said. “We’ve seen spectators lunging at or screaming profanities at our elected officials, in front of children, which we do not condone.”

The Carson City School District will be entering a “Mass Action Lawsuit” against several social media companies, joining districts nationwide.

What the lawsuit is asking for is changes to online practices pertaining to cyberbullying and online harassment on social media platforms such as Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Youtube and more, as well as payment to the increased expense undertaken by schools to deal with higher levels of anxiety, depression and self-harm caused, they say, by social media.

The Carson City School District is accepting volunteer applications to fill four (4) vacancies on the district’s Family Life Advisory Committee. The four vacancies include teacher, parent, religious and counselor volunteer representatives.

NV Energy will be replacing poles, removing hazard trees, and replacing equipment along State Route 28 beginning on Sept. 5, through mid-late September 2023. This work is related to the NV Energy Resilience Corridors Project and the company's Natural Disaster Protection Plan, which is aimed at protecting the community from the increased risk of wildfires and other natural disasters.

Construction at the Comstock Country RV Resort, located at the corner of Carson Street and Old Clear Creek next to Bodine’s Casino, has been ongoing for several months.

According to Planning Manager Heather Ferris, the Planning Commission approved a Special Use Permit in August 2022 that reduced the number of RV spaces at Comstock from 150 to 82.

The Nevada Department of Education has recognized Luet Lobsien, a senior at Carson High School, with an award for designing the logo that will brand the NDE’s “Learning for the Future” education conference. The contest was open to all K-12 students with more than 200 student entries from across Nevada.

An Open Letter to Lyon County Republican Leadership:
As Lyon County Democrats, we get it. You are currently the majority party in a sparsely populated county in northern Nevada, and obviously proud of your ability to channel support for former president Donald J. Trump.

After all, Republicans in Lyon County claim the distinction of having renamed the justice center in Yerington after a man who is now facing multiple state and federal charges for election tampering. The irony of the Donald J. Trump Justice Center can’t be understated, so congratulations on that victory.
