UPDATE 1:50PM: The fire, which appears to be on Washoe Tribal land, was around a quarter acre in size, said Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Mason. Growth control was stopped within five minutes of arrival, he said.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies responded Monday afternoon to a brush fire in the area of Center Drive and Gibson Avenue in southeast Carson City.

Historic Virginia & Truckee Trail will host its first River to River Ride, a bicycle unsupported fun ride on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 8 a.m.

Riders may start at either Snyder Avenue in Carson City in front of the Stewart Indian School or at City Plaza in Reno. The ride is 43 miles (86 miles round trip) or rides can go as far as the wish and turn back.

The Carson City School District is hoping to drive home the message that every day counts in a child’s education while participating in the nationwide observance of School Attendance Awareness Month. The annual campaign each September underscores the importance of regular school attendance and the significant impact it has on student academic success.

For more than two decades, Christopher "Chris" Sneed has climbed up a rock outcropping off of US-50 West above Carson City, to plant a flag in honor of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. He changes the flag annually on Sept. 10 so there is a new flag to start off 9/11 with, giving the day a new beginning with the new flag.

My two apple trees are loaded with fruit this year. One is an old tree of unknown variety and the other is a "Red Delicious." The old tree is dropping apples all over the place. Some have a coral-colored blush; others are still greenish yellow.

The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada is promoting “Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week,” Sept. 11-15. The PUCN wants residents to “stay connected” and is reaching out to those who need voice and broadband services but can’t afford it.

Fun times Saturday at the Camel Races at Virginia City. Festivities continue Sunday, Sept. 10 which is Family Day with a show at noon. The first 100 kids ride a camel for free. Gates open an hour in advance of each show start.

On Friday, Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo issued an update on the recovery efforts taken to assist counties impacted by Hurricane Hilary in August. The severe weather event resulted in destruction across several counties, leaving state officials and partners to ensure impacted counties received the essential resources necessary for response and recovery.

On Saturday, Muscle Powered, Safe Routes to School, and Mayor Lori Bagwell joined forces for a bike rodeo at Mills Park, during which riders of all ages could try out different wheeled-apparatuses, take home free helmets, discuss BMX, and much more.

“In years past, Muscle Powered has hosted bike rodeos and we are excited to re-strengthen our partnership with Western Nevada Safe Routes to School to bring back events that teaches kids about bike safety,” organizers wrote.

Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery is celebrating the works of Pam Black. Pam has been part of the gallery for over 12 years and this is her final show.

Donuts is a 9-year-old lady at our Carson City shelter. She has been available for adoption since the beginning of August.

Near or above average high temperatures, sunny skies and dry conditions are expected for the Carson City area and surrounding counties through the weekend, with a slight chance of showers south of US-50, mainly in Mineral and Mono counties, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

Carson City Supervisors approved Thursday a HUD grant which for the past year has helped to take a dozen individuals off the streets.

According to Carson City Health and Human Services’s Mary Jane Ostrander, who oversees the program, the program allows Carson City to place two homeless individuals into two-bedroom apartments so that they can get on their feet, find employment, and eventually take over the leases themselves.
