Lisa Jayne to present lecture Oct. 21

Carson City Historical Society s proud to host amateur historian Lisa Jayne presenting a lecture on Maj. William Garrard, on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021, at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. Major Garrard was an early Carson City settler, an assistant to two Nevada Governors, a Warden of the state prison, and Superintendent of the Mint. He was also Lisa Jayne's great great great grandfather.

Nevada Raider Nation, Carson City Chapter will host a game watch at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, as the Las Vegas Raiders take on the Chicago Bears in Las Vegas.

At 2:11 p.m., a vehicle crash between two vehicles was reported in the area of Highway 50 and Lompa Lane in the Westbound lanes.

Injuries are unknown at this time.

Motorists should seek alternate routes or use caution in the area.

Multiple agencies joined together at the Carson City Courthouse on Saturday afternoon to run through multiple active shooter scenarios.

Law enforcement and first responders had to work with a dangerous shooter, gunshot victims, clearing civilians, and hostage negotiations, which are all done in order to better perfect their response time and communication, if a real active shooter situation were to occur.

UPDATE 7:30 p.m.: Deputies are working to clear the scene, and the road should be reopened at approximately 7:45 p.m.

It is still unclear what the unknown substance was, or whether it is considered hazardous.

A puppy was removed from the residence and was placed in the custody of animal control.

The Nevada Commission for Women launched Elevate Her as a bipartisan campaign, to encourage qualified and engaged women to apply for state boards and commissions. Their mission is to bring even more gender parity to boards and commissions, state positions and ultimately corporate boards in the state.

The Commission wants to ensure we embrace the full talents of all the people who live in Nevada.

You could call Dustin Bass an over-achiever, but that wouldn’t be saying enough. Bass holds two Bachelor Degrees, a Masters in Nursing and is pursuing a Doctorate degree at Yale in health care policy, innovation, and system leadership. All this while working as the Assistant Vice President of Patient Care at a major hospital in North Carolina, at only 34 years old.

Carson High Safe Grad is in need of volunteers, committee members and new board members for next year. Over the past few years our volunteers, committee members and board members have retired or are looking to retire as they no longer have students in the school district.

While Health Data the past two years has been focused on COVID-19 and its increase of transmission rates, another transmission has seen a staggering fall in numbers within the Quad-County region: sexually transmitted infections.

Carson City Juvenile Services’ newest employee Tofi, a Labrador Retriever, was brought to the Board of Supervisors today to be introduced to the BOS and community of Carson City.

She is a Hungarian Labrador Retriever, who initially began her career as a K-9 Deputy with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. It was decided Tofi was not fit to be a K-9 dog to sniff drugs due to her mellow disposition.

Tofi was rehomed to the Chief of Juvenile Services, Ali Banister, who has now introduced Tofi to the Carson City Juvenile Detention Center.

Dee Dee Foremaster, Executive Director of the Rural Center for Independent Living (RCIL) and Do Drop In day refuge for the homeless and mentally ill will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. Her presentation will be an update on the status of her efforts to obtain stable sources of grant funding for the organization's ongoing activities, and ways that members of the public might be able to help with those efforts.

The Friday, Oct. 8 concert with Comstock Cowboys has been postponed due to rain & cold weather forecast for Friday. It will be rescheduled for Late May/Early June 2022. On Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, the Carson City Fire Department, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Department of Alternative Sentencing, and Juvenile Services is conducting an “Active Shooter Response” training at the Carson City Courthouse on Musser Street. The one-day training event will focus on response to an active shooter incident using a unified approach.

The Carson City Cinema Club presents “Great Expectations” (1047) on Tuesday, November 2 at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall (511 West King Street-the old Catholic church).

Doors open at 5:30 pm; film trivia and discussion begin at 6:00 pm and the film starts at 6:30.

UPDATE: Caltrans announced it will close three routes over Sierra mountain passes on Thursday due to a storm system moving into the region bringing snow to the upper elevations.

State Route 108 at Sonora Pass will close at noon, State Route 89 Monitor Pass will close at 2 p.m. and State Route 120 will closed at 5 p.m., according to Caltrans.

The Brewery Arts Center is adding two new art classes on Friday’s beginning this Friday, Oct. 8 through a new partnership with arts instructor Debbie Corona of the Carson Valley Mobile Art Center.

A car went off the road into a ditch off of South Curry Street behind the Nevada Railroad Museum on Wednesday afternoon. The driver was not seriously injured.

A 35-year-old man was arrested Tuesday morning following a vehicle pursuit that began in Reno and ended in Fernley, in which the suspect went the wrong way along multiple roadways and nearly struck a Nevada Department of Transportation road crew.

Hungry bears looking to fatten up before winter have been roaming Carson City and surrounding valleys in larger numbers this season and that's in part due to drought and nearby wildfires, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

Dayton Intermediate School 7th and 8th grade girls basketball look to close out the season with the Sage Brush League Tournament. Games will be held in Yerington on October 8th, 2021. 7th grade plays at 3 pm and 8th grade at 4 pm with the winners advancing. Come out and support these young athletes.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has partnered with other participating Nevada law enforcement agencies in the Joining Forces program and is urging pedestrians and drivers to be aware of each other and to share the road responsibly.

Several local girls golf teams will get a financial boost this week. The annual Girlfriends Golf Tournament, held Sunday, Oct. 3 at Dayton Valley Golf Course, netted $3,795 which will be donated to several girls’ high school teams.
