UPDATE: The Nevada Highway Patrol is reporting a fatality in a crash involving a pedestrian Wednesday night on Highway 50 East near Deer Run Road. NHP is handling the investigation. The westbound lane was closed and re-opened at 9:22 p.m.

Carson City Fire Department, sheriff's deputies and the Nevada Highway Patrol were called to a vehicle crash Wednesday night involving a pedestrian in the area of Highway 50 East and Deer Run Road.

As the number of bears looking for food before winter has increased around the Carson City area this season, a presentation on black bear management on Thursday, Oct. 14 is especially timely.

Beginning Thursday, October 7, 2021, Partnership Douglas County and Tamarack Turnaround, a philanthropic group of community volunteers, are disbursing over $80,000 raised to individuals and families whose homes were destroyed and were displaced as a result of the Tamarack Fire.

The Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation announced Wednesday they have awarded $3 million to 19 organizations assisting with the aftermath of the recent wildfires in the Lake Tahoe Basin area.

This is in addition to the $1 million that was awarded to 29 organizations in the early part of September bringing the total donation from the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation to $4 million to support the wildfire efforts.

Virginia City’s “Hauntober” is a month-long celebration of all things spooky in the haunted town, chock full of events for all ages. Returning for its second year, Cemetery Gin’s Hunt for Spirits, happening Saturday, Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., is the ultimate outdoor escape room, taking participants on a tasty scavenger hunt through the town’s saloons, shops and restaurants, searching for clues to the riddle and sampling drinks along the way.

The Carson City Host Lions Club is sponsoring a fun Chalk Art Contest as part of the Nevada Day festivities on Oct. 30. The contest is open to individuals, families, and businesses. Contestants will create chalk art masterpieces on sidewalk at a central location on East Washington Street based on the theme of “My Favorite Moment in Nevada.”

It is with great pride and pleasure that the Eagle Valley Women's Golf Club has been able to support the Carson High School girls golf team. This years check is $500. Thanks to Wade Greenlee and Keith Squires for their coaching! What a great team!

CARSON CITY — On Oct. 4, 2021 Xquisite, a local nonprofit located in Carson City, held its first golf tournament at Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley. We are a nonprofit that actively responds positively to eminent dangers on behalf of the victims of human trafficking, sexual assault and domestic violence.

Carson City Elks Lodge No. 2177 is hosting a fundraiser tea to benefit the Holiday with a Hero organization this Saturday Oct. 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Nevada Room at the Governor's Mansion.

Earlier this month, another great Campagni Cares recipient was selected: the For Kids Foundation, assisting children from birth through age 20, in Northern Nevada.

The Brewery Arts Center will be starting a new singer/songwriter series this Saturday night in what was formerly the Maizie Harris Jesse Black Box Theater, now simple known as The Maizie. Musicale @TheMaizie will be performed in an intimate setting with local and touring singer and songwriters giving them an opportunity to connect with the audience, interact and discuss the creative process.

Advocates to End Domestic Violence, the crisis shelter in Carson City for victims and families of domestic and sexual violence, will host its annual Light after Dark benefit 10K and 5K walk and run this Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021 at Riverview Park.

In Remembrance: John N. Lujetic

John N. Lujetic, died Sept. 10, 2021. He was 63. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, October. 16, 2021, at 11 a.m. at High Sierra Fellowship, 1250 Gilman Ave, Gardnerville, NV 89410, by Pastor Rich Lammay, John’s cousin.

An Art Show by eight of the West's best representational western, wildlife and landscape artists will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23 and Sunday, Oct. 24 from 10am to 3pm at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 US Highway 395N in Gardnerville, NV.

The Historic Fourth Ward School Museum is honored to host Carolyn Grattan Eichin — historian, anthropologist, archaeologist, and award-winning author of "From San Francisco Eastward: Victorian Theater in the American West" which is the topic she'll be presenting.

The Carson City School Board meeting will take place tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 12 beginning at 7 p.m. inside the Robert Crowell Board Room at the Community Center.

Topics for discussion include special revenue funds, policy changes, and more.

HCC's meeting features speakers on Families First and Domestic Violence

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties hosts it’s October meeting on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at 9am via Zoom (connection details below). The public meeting includes member updates and introductions, discussion of matters of regional importance to health and wellness, plus presentations by guest speakers. Special presentations this month will focus on Nevada Families First and Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer, so access to screenings is critically important. This work is continuing during the COVID-19 pandemic. To accommodate women who are due for a mammography screening, Northern Nevada Health Centers continually criss-cross the state and make stop in local communities.

Re: The approval of the slaughterhouse on Highway 50. It is unconscionable that the Planning Commission allowed a substantial change to the application and approved this item over the objections of many Carson City citizens. Most of the people in favor of this proposal were from other jurisdictions, including a Douglas County Planning Commissioner (they dis-approved of this item). An additional public hearing was clearly indicated with the changes suggested by the applicant, but the Planning Commission chose to ignore the public. Whom do they answer to?

In 1984 at the Six Flags Adventure Park in Brown Mills, New Jersey, eight teenagers died as a result of a fire breaking out in the park’s Haunted Castle attraction. Haunted houses are a fun way to celebrate Halloween, but it is important to note that there are safety considerations that need to be addressed to ensure a fun and safe attraction.

I have occasionally found some scary-looking bugs inside the house, usually on screens. These are fairly large, fierce-looking creatures called leaffooted bugs with leaf-like bits on their hind legs. They can be 3/4 to 1-inch in length, which you have to admit is daunting. They are strong fliers and when something that big flies near your face, it’s startling!
