Slaughterhouse Community Meeting

Event Date:
October 9, 2021 - 11:00am

The Downtown 2020 Group is Appealing the Planning Commissions decision to approve a Slaughterhouse on Hwy. 50.

Due to time constraints, I am informing the public now because we have collaborated with the “Coalition of Citizens for Peaceful Enjoyment” and are having a community meeting re: this subject this Saturday at the Library, October 9, from 11-1. Please join us. Contents of the Planning Commission meeting is below.

On Wednesday, September 29, The Planning Commission Approved a Slaughterhouse for Carson City off of Hwy.. 50 East, directly across from Carson City Towing and next to Villa Sierra Mobile Home Park. This is a horrific idea to put this in a populated area. I can enjoy an occasional hamburger and good steak like anyone else; however, a slaughterhouse does not belong in Carson City, The Capital of Nevada. This serves the minority, not the majority. For those that need this service, we have Butler Meats. The meeting was a packed house of people who did not want it and handful a who did. This will have a strong impact on our City by dropping our property values.

I spoke at this meeting and offered an alternative. There is plenty of land between Silver Springs and Dayton where there is nothing for many miles. As far as Water and Sewer, Drill a Well, use Septic Tanks and Generators. Be self sustained, again, you don’t put something like this in a populated area, especially the Capital of Nevada, that will have a stench and the cries of the animals that can carry for miles, not to mention the insects they will attract.

It was denied in California and Douglas Co. for the reasons above. And to add insult to injury, the Douglas Co. Commissioner, Maureen Casey, denied their Slaughterhouse proposal that was on a ranch outside of Gardnerville on Hwy. 88. This would have been ‘their greeting' for guests and locals coming into Valley and people living in the surrounding area. The community did not want the stench, insects, and the cries of animals in distress. Ms. Casey then shows up at this meeting to support approval for Carson City. How was this passed? Do you not look at the history of rejections and why?

My heart went out to the 4H little girl whose mother brought her to speak about the benefits of a Slaughterhouse. This Is very much an adult issue.

Who supports the people with no voice? There is a whole residential community of people in this area that are not taken into account and we are all part of that community. They trust you. How were the requirements of the Nevada Open Meeting Law carried out? I am aware it was on the local news the night before and morning of the meeting. Additionally, it is my understanding that some of the nearby residences received a notice the week before and many businesses were not informed. And then it is approved in one meeting?

Our Sewer Plant, where they have taken many precautions to keep the smell down - on windy, cold or a hot days, the odor is strong and the nearby residents by the Eagle Valley School have to live with this. This is a farther distance than the Highway 50 project. Think how much noise a pack of barking dogs make and this slaughterhouse would be 60 animals (or up to 120 animals during special events) in distress. Once built it will be nearly impossible to get rid of, not to mention, the contamination of the land.

The Planning Commissioners asked for a yearly report from the owners. What they need is a report from the public and Board Of Supervisors before this was even considered.
This will have an strong impact on all our property values. If you all remember when “The Downtown 2020 Group”, (of which I am Founder and President) were working on the Downtown Beautification Plan with the Goal to support the Local Businesses, attract New Businesses and improve our economy. We did just that! All to build a walkable and friendly community where people of all ages could come and mingle.

We Accomplished:
· Downtown Fence Removal
· Going from a 4 lane Freeway to a 2 lane Hwy
· 20’sidewalks
· Turn Lanes
· Parking and Bike Lane
· Landscaping/Signage
· Marketed Businesses & improving our economy
The Downtown 2020 Group spent years from 2009-2016 working on our downtown plan. We held a Stake Holder’s Meeting where we had a petition with total business support. We worked with the planning Commission, N-Dot and attending monthly Board of Supervisor meetings as well as Public hearings, of which, we intensively and passionately spoke about the downtown improvements & benefits to our community by making downtown a local gathering place and a tourist attraction. All to improve our economy by creating an environment that would benefit our youths to stay, build careers and raise families. We hit one road block after another. But, on November 6, 2014, our dream for the betterment of Carson City came to fruition when it was approved by the Board of Supervisors who shared our vision. Work began in March, 2016, and was completed by Nevada Day.

We are not only known as a Friendly Senior Community, but we are also a College Town. We need to continue to create, encourage and improve our atmosphere. Our environment with open space and small farmlands is part of Carson City’s charm and quaintness.

I am a Third Generation from Carson City, and I believe the Slaughterhouse will be detrimental to Carson City and detract people from coming here. This is how they will be welcomed to our Community as they enter the East side of town with the stench of the Slaughterhouse.

Please Join our meeting this Saturday at the Library, October 9, from 11-1. It is an opportunity for you to have a voice and be heard..
