Teachers and students enjoy participating in competitive endeavors and events, especially when the winners receive worthwhile Starbucks gift cards and a first place, second place, or third place certificate. The event is the three times per school year annual writing competition.

Krysta Palmer, a Carson City resident who grew up in Gardnerville, graduated from Western Nevada College and the University of Nevada, Reno, made history during the Summer Olympics in Tokyo as the first U.S. woman to finish on the podium during individual diving since the Sydney Games in 2000.

With the decline of the Comstock Lode starting in the early 1880s, Nevada was in the middle of an economic depression. The 1880 census showed a population in Carson City of 4229, by 1897 the population had decreased by more than 40 percent.

UPDATE: A pedestrian struck by a vehicle Thursday night on South Carson Street in Carson City near I-580 died of injuries, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. The incident happened shortly before 7 p.m. The identity of the victim has not been released. The incident is under investigation and an arrest has been made. We will update as more information becomes available.

Carson City Fire Department, sheriff's deputies and the Nevada Highway Patrol responded Thursday evening to a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on South Carson Street near the junction of I-580.

CARSON CITY — There is just one week left to see BEADS: Indigenous Beadwork of the Great Basin in the Great Basin Native Artists Gallery at the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum. The show ends Nov. 5, 2021.

The community is invited to join the Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department this Friday, Oct. 29, for a lovely autumn afternoon at Silver Saddle Ranch celebrating the 25th anniversary of the passage of the Question 18, the Quality of Life Initiative!

That’s when a core group of volunteers began their pursuit of the mill’s restoration, working tirelessly to not only save the historic building from imminent collapse, but to restore it to its former glory for the benefit of the public.

The Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park in Carson City will not be happening this year due to non-COVID related reasons, according to organizers.

CARSON CITY — With the scheduled retirement of Superintendent Richard Stokes, set for June 2022, the Carson City School District and the Board of Trustees are reaching out to parents, families, staff and community members to provide essential feedback in a survey to help determine the most desirable characteristics in their search for the new, incoming superintendent.

On Friday, October 22, 2021, at approximately 6:06 p.m., Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers responded to a single vehicle rollover on SR-208 at Lyon County Mile Marker 13, in Yerington.

To the Board of Supervisors, I live within a short radius of the proposed slaughterhouse. I’m deeply concerned that it’s being presented to the community as a boutique retail store with a slaughterhouse that will have a minimal impact on the community.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City, will mark its 80th anniversary Thursday, Oct. 28 at a lecture exploring the institution’s past. The arrival of notable collections, expansion of facilities, installation of exhibits and honors received all will be explored in the talk offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m., both in-person and online.

Speeders, red light runners, stop sign runners in general less than great drivers. In this day and age seeing a driver with their phone in their hand despite local laws, is not unheard of.

While there are many other reasons for distracted driving as we all know and most have been guilty of, there is no excuse. In a busy section of Mountain Street located behind the old Carson Tahoe Hospital and multiple medical offices, an accident is waiting to happen.
