Indigenous Beadwork of the Great Basin Exhibit in final week at Stewart Museum, open Nevada Day
CARSON CITY — There is just one week left to see BEADS: Indigenous Beadwork of the Great Basin in the Great Basin Native Artists Gallery at the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum. The show ends Nov. 5, 2021.
This exhibit of contemporary beadwork by Indigenous artists from Nevada’s Northern and Southern Paiute, Western Shoshone, and Washoe tribal nations has been on display since April 22, 2021.
The exhibit was curated by Melissa Melero-Moose, founder of the Great Basin Native Artists (GBNA). Great Basin Native Artists is a collective of Indigenous artists living in/or originally from the Great Basin areas of Nevada, California, Southern Oregon, Southern Idaho, and Utah. Their mission is to create better knowledge of the art and peoples of the Great Basin and to create opportunities for this underrepresented region in all forms of the arts. Melero-Moose is Northern Paiute enrolled in the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe.
Melero-Moose is curating a new exhibition for the GBNA Gallery at the Stewart Museum called “Inheritance: Basketry and Design of the Great Basin.” This exhibition will open November 15th and run through May 27, 2022. Among the artists featured in this new basket exhibition are Leah Brady, Ben Aleck, Karma Henry, Micquaela Jones, Topaz Jones, Lucy Parker, and many more.
Curator Melero-Moose said, "The Great Basin Native Artists Gallery is a unique place to see the contemporary Indigenous arts from this region. The BEADS exhibition delivers an array of beadwork artistry exclusive to this area from beaded baby cradleboards and regalia to fashion design and beaded basketry. Thank you to the many visitors who came out from all over the country and beyond to see this show and make it a success."
The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum is open Monday-Friday, 10 am to 5 pm, closed on weekends and state and federal holidays. The museum will be open for a special event on Nevada Day, Saturday October 30, from 1-5 pm, featuring demonstrations by local Native artists.
